Trauma brings people together and New Orleans traumatizes it’s residents regularly. I say that tongue in cheek but what my neighbors and I do for each other right now leaves imprints on us.

It predates traumatic events like Katrina. I know people whose families have lived for generations on the same 2-3 blocks in a particular neighborhood. They won’t even leave New Orleans to go away for college.

That's actually one of the state's biggest problems. Once you take away the "culture" (drinking, eating, partying, drinking some more, eating again then partying) there really isn't much left. Some people need more than that.

Uh…it’s not 1988 with Tom Ed McHugh in charge.

That just passed a bill for reparations for black residents. Frick that.

Now any of the mountain towns (Cashiers, Lake Toxaway, Brevard, Boone, Bryson and numerous others) are among the best places anywhere in the US to live/raise a family.

I don't think hurricanes are driving people out, probably just tips the scales in lots of folks decision making

That’s exactly right. Louisiana, specifically the NOLA metropolitan area, has much bigger problems than hurricanes. A previous poster said it best. The city has been dying for years both economically and culturally. It won’t be saved and I believe it will continue its downward spiral. Breaks my heart.

I firmly believe New Orleans will never recover from this. One thing to open back up without restrictions (post Katrina, and a different ballgame now with covid with restrictions. The hospitality industry is now forever dead. Convince me otherwise

It’s a cool, unique culture. Every time I return though I’m surprised at how trashy it is. It’s like NOLA takes pride in smelling like urine. Bum encampment in Baton Rouge is insane. Tack on high crime and crappy education. You have find niches to live like the north shore or AP.

Not a fan of ATL but companies move there. How often due companies look to move to NOLA?

With virtual work far more common place due to COVID, it’s far easier to be in a better place. Just go to anywhere on the Redneck riviera and see how different it is. Still good food but a whole different experience. Also looked at South Carolina and Charlotte.

This is absolutely true. That said, the culture in us doesn’t disappear when we leave. I’ve found it to be contagious as I share it with my new neighbors. You can “Be a New Orleanian wherever you are”.

Born in BR, graduated from LSU. Moved to Houston right after college for 11 years, it was fine coming back to visit and do fun things. When kid #3 was on the way, we had this idea that it would be better to move back close to family. We made it less than 5 years. We noticed that all we were doing was bitching about everything. Weather, schools, politics, crime, lack of nice things, shitty looking everywhere, litter, crap infrastructure, storms - so we decided to stop bitching and leave. Made a list with a bunch of places and rated by different aspects. Some additional motivators came out of that list quickly - like saving $20K/year or more on just taxes and insurance by moving here. Settled on the Nashville area. Best thing we could have done for ourselves and our kids. Unpredicted benefits include all traces of 2 of the kids' asthma going away completely. Never going back. Miss the food, and try to get to an LSU game once a season.

I didn’t realize this until I got older and actually stopped drinking and/or caring about sports. Without those 2 things, Louisiana has nothing for me outside of my immediate family.
