How did you handle it emotionally?
Yes. Several.
Some are easier than others. Some make it very easy.

Yes. I go about my day afterwards. People fire themselves. I'm just the one that tells them that they have to leave now and are no longer employed.

When I first went into private practice I had to fire a hygienist that was not cutting it. I called her into my office to give her the news that she was fired and she sat down and immediately told me that she had decided to give her two weeks notice.
It caught me off guard and I had to work hard not to smile.

Should have accepted her resignation to get out of unemployment

Was I supposed to feel guilty?
I would feel bad for having to lay someone off, but firing them is usually something they bring upon themselves.

Lots. Most at one time, 587. Walked out with a smile.

They usually fire themselves. But yes. I never liked having to do it. I worked one job, when I would have to take them to the office, do the paperwork, and then load them and their tool box in the back of a pick-up and drive them to the parking lot. Alone. Some of these guys could have been certified. Talk about a long drive and nervous moments.

On earth the saying is "it's business, not personal"
In heaven it will be "it's personal, not business.
Let me digress. When I go a store on earth, the person working there will talk to me because it's business, not personal. Anywhere I go in heaven, that same person will never talk to me because it's personal, not business.
Things sound better in my head, but someone has to get where I'm coming from on the saying "it's not personal, it's business" will reverse in the afterlife to "it's not business, it's personal"

Nope. I've had around 10 come and go due to better job opportunities. One quit because he was passed on a promotion. You'd have to do something really really bad for us to fire you.

I wouldn't feel bad for firing someone if they did something that required that action. Laying someone off because the company can't afford their salary anymore would blow all kinds of dick.

Plenty of times. I usually spell out the reasons and ask them what they would do if in my position. Many have just got up and walked out . Some have begged some have gotten pissed. All have hopefully learned from their experience about a thing called accountability and consequences ...

Yes, I have fired several people through the years and it typically affects me deeply each and every time. Easily the worst part of my job and it is not even close....

didn't bother me too much since she was totally incompetent.

When firing a thief or an otherwise really poor employee, I have no issues and give zero fricks. As is said, those employees fire themselves.

Fired one motherfricker about three hours before his probationary period ended. Didn't return from his break.
The HR bitch, who acted more like a union rep, bitched about me not firing him earlier if I was going to fire him. He didn't frick up enough to be fired before then.

Luckily everyone I have had to fire did it to themselves and had many chances to get right. I've never been on either side of a layoff or downsizing fortunately.

Firing someone is generally pretty easy, they generally had a pattern of bad behavior and the fact is that in a situation like that if you don't do it everyone else on the team will wonder why not.
Laying someone off is a whole different story b/c usually it means management didn't drum up enough business and it isn't the employee's fault at all.

As a sales manager I use to hire/fire 3 per month - based purely on performance. They took the job knowing this though. Later in life I had a great crew that was with us through Katrina which involved folks moving to Atl, Tampa, Boone, and several other places until our building was repaired 8 month later. Then had to do a RIF in 2006 between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That was horrible. In fact, I resigned because of it.

Worked for a Fortune 500 company that paid me to fire people.
