I did this about six months ago. Although I’m no longer bothered by rings or vibrations from unknown callers, it has not reduced the number of spam calls. The only calls that are allowed to go through people on your contact list. So if someone calls not on your list, say a doctors office or whoever, they get routed straight to voicemail. Although you miss the call immediately, they can leave a voicemail if they want to get in touch.
Before I did this, I could barely watch a video or listen to a song without a call, interrupting it

I tell them my name is Dinesh Jayashankar then whatever handler they have listening in usually cuts the call right then

I have silenced any calls or facetime notifications from anyone not in my contacts. If it is important, they can leave a message. This helps tremendously.
I also have blocked many numbers as well.
But due to two factor authentication for many websites, you cannot silence or block all texts from anyone not in your contacts. If a spam texts gets through, I just block that number.
My biggest issue is spam emails. The emails come in waves, but I can get 15 or so overnight and 30-40 a day. You can block the address, but it just comes from another email address again later.
I also have blocked many numbers as well.
