Yeah, this is a shame because my kids like sports, but we're not putting them through this and I make sure they get plenty of exercise anyways.

Yes. It kinda sucks too. Here in palm beach county most high schools also pick from all travel ball kids too. Seems like the days are gone where kids can just kinda naturally improve throughout childhood and then really improve through high school coaching and more intense training.
I’m sure it’s like that most places. Seems like shite is becoming so specialized at such young ages now. Kids should be able to play a bunch of sports IMO. If you’re a household with more than one kid it’s gotta suck horribly.

But it’s the only way they’ll get a scholarship!
One of my coworkers did travel softball with his daughter from age 8 through high school. He calculated with lessons, lodging, etc. he spent about 100k over that period of time. She peaked in 10th grade and never got a scholarship offer. If he had invested that money he could have paid her way to any college in the country.

You’ll eat your words once my little Claxxtyn is playing in Yankee Stadium.

I guess we'll start having 8 year old soccer "World Cup" championships in Panama City Beach every other month.

There aren’t even local options anymore.

So do you have a Jaxyn, braelynn, or Brayden?

A lot of the travel ball shite is parents living through their kids. I’m not pushing my kid to do that if he doesn’t want to.
WORLD CHAMPIONS OF CARENCRO REC CENTER TOURNAMENT, BITCHES!!!

baseball is weird because you almost have to play travel ball every year to have a chance at making varsity in high school
a kid can start playing school basketball or football in 9th grade and be a power 5 recruit 2 years later

It’s every sport. Competitive motocross racing is the same. These kids go to training facilities to become pro racers by 17.

Little billjaminaxxyn won’t be doing that shite. Gotta save his heater for the pros. I’m not letting some chump travel ball coach blow out his elbow.

You do know that it’s optional, right? No one makes you do it. I have 5 kids. Two are either out of high school or very close to it. Neither played travel anything and were successful in high school sports and, more importantly, academics.

We are all very impressed.

I don't get it. My nephew plays on a regional travel team (they don't travel out of state), but they had a tournament last weekend. They play 2 games on Saturday then they do a bracket tournament on Sunday. I dob't go to the travel ball games, just his school games.
But the money these places must make is crazy.
There were 14 teams, I want to say it cost $1500 a team. $10 entry fee. For two small gatorades it cost $5. They sell 3 chicken tenders for $10. Its an all out scam.

What confuses me about travel ball is why is it necessary to drive 5+ hours to play a team a different team of 10 year old kids? I can understand maybe the Baton Rouge all stars playing the Lafayette all stars for a game but its 10 year old kids what is the point of the excessive traveling?

I dated a travel volleyball coach once..
I learned a while back that people pay coaches to coach these baseball teams (not all of them of course), but a guy I know, his daughter plays on a softball travel team in which they pay a coach to coach them. They go all around the Southwest region of the country to play, but when I first heard that I couldn't believe it..

quote:I honest to God have no idea. Friends of mine are all ate up with travel ball with their kids and I just don't get it. It's borderline cultish to be that invested in your kids playing sports - get home from work on Friday at 6 and out the door driving at 730p to get to some backwoods Alabama playground to spend all weekend, not getting back until Sunday evening then having to be back to work Monday morning? I mean once every couple of months is cool but they're gone 3 out of every 4 weekends doing this stuff and wonder why they're exhausted and stressed out all the time.
what is the point of the excessive traveling?

Are you serious?
You know how many kids play travel ball for years then when they get to HS they either get burned out or don't make the team?
There are a lot of kids with talent from families who can't afford travel ball.
Do they have travel ball in Cuba and South America? Because that's who ends up in MLB.
