Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Andrew Shultz and others are pretty damn funny. Shultz sells "Anti-Social Justice" shirts at his shows.

Listen to Bill Burr's podcast. That dude is fricking hilarious.

One comedian I can't seem to define as a comedian is Joe Rogan. He has some good podcast shows, but I just don't think he is funny.

What's tragic about it? Or maybe you were just trying to stretttccch your mind and use a four (4) syllable words.

Wonder of hes gonna mention LSU at all

If you listen to his podcast. He is a huge LSU fan, he said he became a fan in 07. In one of his episodes about a month ago, he had a show in Memphis. He said he was going to go to a Grizzles game then go down to New Orleans to make a pelicans came and once he does that he will have been to every NFL, NBA & MLB stadium/arena.

He mentioned that he still has 4 or 5 NHL arenas to visit. And has only been to a few MLS stadiums so far. He is a huge sports fan.

How old are you? 19? The peak of comedy was probably 30-40 years ago.

or more mainstream

I know what mainstream means, but what do you mean by this? When something becomes mainstream it usually means that it has been dialed back so that it will be accepted by more people.

In the 70s, 80s.. Into the 90s.. There were a lot more funny comedians. And they were raw. And they were funny because of their personality. They didn't have to try to be edgy .. They are also more original.

With that said, it doesn't mean there are no longer good comedians.

I never thought he was funny. He just points out something that really isn't that absurd and tries to make it absurd and is very mediocre at it and but keeps pounding it out.
[insert crowd laughing because sitcom sign says so]

it is very tiring and unoriginal. He is funny 1 out of 10 jokes and like a level 7 on funny, but why do people rate things on a scale of 1-10, why not 1 to 7 or 1 to 30 i mean come on why 1-10 and while we are rating things what's the deal with 5 star restaurants. It is a steak nothing over the top about a steak why am i paying 200 dollars for a steak, just because it has 5 stars? I mean come on. 5 star steak... really and what is with steak sauce why is it called steak sauce why can't it just be called sauce... I MEAN cmon. jeez.

that is his jokes and delivery is usually subpar and doesn't tie them back together well. but everyone likes what they like.

Dave Chappelle is king.

Makes no difference to the fact that there has never been a larger market of comedy than there is today. We are in the mist of a stand up comedy boom due to the explosion of streaming networks and rise in the popularity of podcasts

There were a lot of terrible comedians too. You are lumping 3 decades of comedy to compare to the last 5 years of comedy. Hard to do. Plus the OP is saying "real comedy" but is really asking for boundary-pushing comedy, which is merely a subset of comedy. Even now, Burr, Chappelle, C.K., Shaffir, Segura, Burress, Attell, Ross, Hinchcliffe are all currently active and have some bits that push boundaries. Plus good comedy that isn't boundary-pushing like the Sebastian, Gaffigan, Mullaney, Bargatze, Kreischer, Wong, and Jo Koy types.

I completely agree. That is why I was surprised when my friend told me he wasn't bad. I should add some context to it. He was with family members and didn't go on his own. He was expecting it to be bad, but he was saying it wasn't that bad.

But anytime someone says they don't think he is funny (to be clear, I never thought he was funny) you usually get someone who will reply "that's because you don't understand his jokes".

No. It's not really hard to understand. I just don't think listening to someone that comes off as someone who complains about everything is funny.
