Had a friend who would have survived a head on crash on I-55 if these cables were there. 19 years old and a lady high on oxy ended his life way too early.

On June 23, 2010, Jackson entered the southbound lane of Interstate 55 while traveling north, according to the state police report. The report says she was traveling at about 80 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone. She hit Perricone, who was returning from his girlfriend's house in Amite, head-on. The wreck occurred at about 12:30 a.m. just south of the Hwy 3234 exchange. The police report said drug impairment was suspected as the cause of the crash.

and they are a constant reminder if Darwin’s theory to motorcyclist.
Was driving back to Houston from BR after a football game and saw a group of Sunday riders in the East bound lanes past Beaumont standing on the side of the road. One of their friends had crashed into the barriers with his bike. Dude had a sheet over him with all of his friends standing around with stunned looks on their faces. Not sure how it happened. Go out for a Sunday ride and lose a friend. Kind of sad.

This makes it sound like she took an exit down to the southbound lane while heading north, "you're going the wrong way". No where does it say she crossed the median.

That's not a pretty scene. A few years back, I passed one coming back to Baton Rouge from New Orleans. I counted at least three sheets kinda scattered all over the median near a mangled motorcycle. My girlfriend (not the brightest and not my girlfriend anymore) asked why there were three people on the motorcycle. The look on her face when I replied, "...there weren't" and the implications of that clicked for her was priceless.
I guess she was under some fairy tale delusion that those cables wouldn't cause horrible damage to prevent crossovers at all costs.

So why are they there?
To keep your 70+ mph arse from sliding on the grassy road verge head-on into oncoming traffic.
I saw a newer Mustang hit one and it shredded the dog shite out of it.
