Got to see him a few times with The Grateful Dead. Loved how that grand piano sounded in the mix.

Still mad at my buddy for never pulling the trigger on the “Me So Hornsby” shirts back when Keith played bball here.

I saw him in the late 80’s at a theater in Lafayette. That was a good small setting show.
THAT was a good day. (Evening, aktsually)

Well, they passed a law when he was 64
To give those who ain't got no birthday cake a little more
But it only goes so far
'Cause the baker won't make a bigger kind
When all he sees is the closing time
And sends you to the check out line, no...

Fourth best keys player for the Dead
Not sure about that.
Pigpen…love the blues but he really limited the band. Yes pigpen has chops as a singer but he really wasn’t skilled as a keyboardist.
Brent… late 79 - 85 was the second worst period aside from 93-the end. 87-90 was perhaps, imo, as good as 76-78 as 70-74…it took awhile for Brent to find his stride.
Keith - was an incredible pianist but simply didn’t want to transition to sythnthzizer/organ, plus his wife sucked, literally.
Bruce - came in and simply dominated. And he did so when Jerry was losing interest in the band. There were some damn good shows between 90-93, and usually those shows were with Bruce. What’s interesting is that you could always know jerry would up his game whenever Bruce played whether w/ the dead or JGB. Only complaint was the friggin accordion.
It really would be difficult to rank them because they were each so different.
1. Brent
2. Bruce
3. Keith
4. Pigpen
5. Tom Constanten
6. Vince - never understood why they brought this crazy bipolar frick into the band.

Happy Birthday Bruce R Hornsby
His son played for LSU and now the Dallas Mavericks.
Or am I thinking of someone else?

quote:Met Bruce in the Richmond Airport parking lot a few years back. He drives an older Cherokee with an LSU bumper sticker. I had parked next to him. I'm not a fan of his and had no idea what he looked like but I started up a conversation. He said yeah he's a big LSU fan, his son played basketball there. I'm like who? Keith Hornsby..."Oh...so you are Bruce, nice to meet you".
Musician Bruce Hornsby turns 68 years old today. A shout out to Bruce and Kathy Hornsby and to their son , Keith Hornsby.
Nice guy.
