For anyone interested in the French Revolution, Mike Duncan’s podcast Revolutions goes through it in great detail… I love it.
Also listening to his biography on the Marquee De Lafayette.

Those French knew how to get an insurrection on.

Thanks for the recommendation.
So, do you think that Bastille Day is worthy of celebration, considering the horrendous events that followed the storming?
The monarchy and the aristocracy were certainly corrupt, but was the toppling worth the chaos of the revolution and all that it unleashed?

Something had to give… the 3rd estate made up 95% of the French population but had zero political say… their regressive tax structure had reached its breaking point, and bourbon monarchy was flat fricking broke. Did it have to devolve into what it became?… absolutely not…. and with better leadership it wouldn’t have.
But France should celebrate storming the bastille… it a symbol to the beginning of republican government.

The French Revolution put Europe on the road to Communism.
frick the French Revolution, frick the Jacobins. Thank you France for giving us the great teachings of people like Robespierre.

Eh it’s very questionable whether Bastille day should be celebrated or mourned. Definitely not a for sure positive for French, European or world history.

That’s certainly an opinion.
Why happened in France in 1789 was inevitable… the nobility and clergy (who combined made up ~5% of the population) could not hold onto that power forever… had Louis XVI been a better leader, it would not have devolved into what it became. Some form of constitutional monarchy could’ve worked, with a gradual shift to republicanism.
