and what was the deal with this secene?

It's in the book. There is a scene when Jack is in the bar (IIRC) and there's a big group surrounding Horace Derwent and he is basically making this guy, Roger, his bitch by calling him a dog. It's implied that Derwent is maybe bisexual, or at least likes to get his dick sucked by guys on the low, and I think this is just Kubric's interpretation.

That's what I gathered from reading the book and watching the movie. Definitely might not be accurate.

I really really like the movie adaptation of the Shining, but it comes nowhere near the book. I mean that in terms of quality and the fact that it completely glosses over certain themes. The book is absolutely overflowing with themes of alcoholism, and while it's touched on in the movie, it doesn't come close to the depth of the book. Also, the movie paints Jack as the bad guy that's being manipulated by the hotel, when in the book Jack Torrance literally becomes possessed by the hotel. It's not even the same person. You can kinda see that in the movie, but to really get the most out of the shining you need to read the book.

I went to the Stanley Hotel last weekend in Estes Park. It did not look like the Overlook Hotel. I was disappointed.

As is with most every movie based on a novel.
And so many times main characters are portrayed differently.
As you say about The Shining, Steven King was disappointed in the movie version because of the changes.

Yeah that's what it looks like. Doubt they had bandaids in 1921.

I didn't care for the book. Stanley Kubrick elevated the material and made a fairly good movie. The bar and ball scenes are my favorite. The bathroom attendant Grady is intense. He uses a word that would get the whole movie cancelled nowadays.
