I know it's common in kids, but I'm 29 and was diagnosed by my doctor yesterday with this. Any OT'ers ever have this? I had knee surgery about a month and a half ago and that pain is nothing compared to this.

Had it as a kid. Remember red spots on my hands and feet, but the worst was an entire mouth full of ulcers. Ulcers everywhere including under the tongue and roof of mouth. Very painful. Sucked arse! Good luck to you.

quote:

You can catch hand-foot-and-mouth disease if:

A person with the infection sneezes, coughs, or blows their nose near you

You touch your nose, eyes, or mouth after you have touched something contaminated by the virus, such as a toy or doorknob

You touch the stools or the fluid from blisters of an infected person

Damn. That's why I try not to touch my face, except right after washing my hands.

It's going around right now in the daycares. It's highly contagious.

Mix benadryl with milk of magnesia and gargle with it once every 2 hours.

I caught it (hit me while I was paddling around the marsh by grand isle fishing several hours from home) after the daycare lady told me that all the kids at daycare had it but that it wasn't contagious to adults. Then my doctor told me that I was only the second adult that he had ever seen with hand foot mouth. Then three other adults in my family got it.

My daughter got it from daycare a few weeks ago. I think I got it too but didn't really have many symptoms. It really sucked for her though.

I had it 4 years ago at 21. Thought I was a freak haha. The tingling sensation of the hands and feet was annoying, but the mouth ulcers were awful.

Funny story. Went to the student health services building at my college and before being seen the doc says "We need to get you tested. I think you have syphilis." Crazy thoughts ensue because I was in a serious relationship. Come to find out it was hand foot and mouth and no stds. The oragel and numb mouth was fun though.

Probably syphilis and not hand-foot-mouth. Got the snuffles too?

One of my coworkers just took his kid to the doctor this week, he said his toenails and fingernails had started falling out. The doctor said that is a symptom that means the kid had just gotten over HFM. He felt bad because his kid is just under 2, so he wasn't able to communicate that he had the pains in his mouth. He said he felt like a terrible parent for not doing something sooner.

I had it in my late-20s as well. Doc said I had the worst case he'd ever seen. I had big-arse ulcers/blisters in the back of my throat and couldn't eat or drink anything for about 12 days. Lost 20 lbs. Worst part is that theres really nothing you can do about it except wait for it to run its course. The doc sprayed my throat with some icy spray that felt like heaven but it wasn't available as a prescription
