I've been around service companies for the last 10 yrs and without a doubt WFT is the most dysfunctional. I was doing contract work a couple years ago and decided I would no longer work for them, they are a mess.
I haven't made any money in the oil biz in about 14 months. I took a job making 25% of what I was making. I am an engineer(non petroleum) and am friends with a bunch of out of work non petroleum engineers that have 10+ years invested in oil and gas. I don't know a single one that has been let go that has found a good job, most haven't found a job. Guys call me all the time asking if I can hook em up with the job I have. I think most guys with the one year of expenses saved up might want to double or triple that.
Us non petroleum engineers always thought that if it all went to poop we would be ok because we had our degrees in other fields to fall back on, well that is not the case. If you have been in O&G no one wants you. Good luck.

Notice you never touched on performance in that diatribe, that is normally a key item, far more so than experience or education in this enviroment.
Not saying that was the issue here but you may want to step back and take another look. We have had the misfortune of releasing several long term employees as well as some short timers and performance was the key criteria not education or experiance.
Age is also a big no no, some companies are really reducing the age of their workforce right now.

Again, I don't know exactly what you work in, and I probably am not familiar with your exact scenarios and what Halliburton is doing. But, when it comes to these layoffs, it's from a high level. Halliburton has a fricking unbelievable duck lodge and deer lease of their own from what I'm told. The people dictating which jobs need to go have access to that if they want. This is coming from the highest level of regional management. You are right that relationships help out as your manager is going to put in a good word for you and not offer you up for being cut. That's just life. But ultimately a field level manager has to have all of his rif's (reduction in force) approved. This is a company worth billions in revenue. they are not making decisions based off of 15k deer leases.
The experience thing though is real. Better workers are losing their jobs. But it's usually because they make more. So it's more beneficial to the bottom line. I know a lot of young guys brought up after layoffs and they get screwed on the pay. So that shop guy, is now doing that coordinator job for 60% of the cost to the company.

Sucks. Lafayette is getting hit hard. All those boys that bought them overpriced homes in RR are pissing themselves right now. I'm glad I transitioned to CP construction project management. F completion. Didn't care for the peaks and valleys.

Lafayette is getting hit hard.
90 is just filled with service companies that are going to shutter most of those locations. Houma, for example, with its abundance of service companies will really feel the impact.
wft has a huge manufacturing facility there (or technically, schriever), and I know the people there are deathly nervous. I was there in mid-dec for an inventory count and they were already at near 50% employee capacity with more cuts to come.

I hate to hear people losing their jobs. But Halliburton is fricking evil.
I hear my liberal friends talk about Cheney and Halliburton being evil, and that's how I know they are stupid and what comes out of their mouth is pure emotion and isn't in any way based on facts. The facts are that KBR was a subsidiary of Halliburton and got the Iraqi contracts, and because they were one of the least profitable units Halliburton ended up selling them off.
