He chickened out at the last second and tilted his head up and to the left prior to pulling the trigger. it was a glancing blow that likely involved damage to the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe damage would explain his public displays of tally whacking.

If anyone remembers back in the early 80s, two guys blew their heads off with a shotgun and blamed it on subliminal messages in a Judas Priest song and sued the band. One of them survived WARNING: gross pic of another dude who survived a shotgun blast to the face
