Have friends going to the normal beach destinations and I keep seeing stuff about the panhandle being infested with bacteria.
How wide is the area to avoid?

I know people turn their nose up at the Florida panhandle, but I've been to many beaches and every coast in the country and the emerald coast has by far the best beaches in the lower 48.

a lot of them are but you have to check each states sites to see exactly which ones are. I think Destin is safe. I went and re-booked my vacation anyways for St. Lucia. Good excuse I think.

Clear here in Panama City Beach, although we are expecting rain for a good portion of today.

The beaches are fine. It's shite news reporting where the problem lies

So glad this is a mountain year for us and not a beach year.
We usually alternate between the two yearly.

yeah we went up to Blue Ridge earlier in the year as well. Mountains are a great destination during the summer. Never gets extremely hot and gets nice and cool in the evening.

And the mayor tells everyone that his sources say the beaches are fine for the holiday weekend... right on cue.

The levels were not high enough to post closure notices on any local beaches, Chapman said. But the television station’s report, which was widely shared on social media, was enough to cause some potential visitors to panic. “The tests come and go,” said Ed Schroeder, director of the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council. “It could be poor today but wonderful tonight. We’ve got over 20 miles of beaches and just one short area apparently had some concern for the Health Department.” Although local officials are not concerned about toxic levels of any kind of bacteria, Chapman advised everyone to take normal precautions when swimming. “Whenever you go to swim in a natural body of water, you have to exercise safety precautions,” Chapman said. “But we have not seen any (flesh eating bacteria) in Okaloosa County this year.”

False report from a weather reporter in Atlanta. Typical.

Rosemary Beach is my favorite beach in the lower 48.

The news report from Atlanta cited the national weather service. Let's think about that sentence for a second as it pertains to bacteria in Florida water
