I live in a large house without AC. However, we have 12" thick stone walls and black out shutters, so it only gets hot if it is above 90 or so for a few weeks... which it has been this summer. I have no problem sleeping with a fan and the windows open, but the 5:00 sunrise and 10:30 sunsets bothered my wife. It has been harder on her (she is pregnant) and she made it clear we are getting a portable unit next year.

I was born in NOLA in 1953, lived there until 1962. For the first few years we had no A/C--instead, Mom and Dad cooled me off with swigs of ice cold Jax.

Talk about good parenting.

My high school in New Iberia Catholic High did not have ac the entire 12 years I went there. Ac at USL was my first. 1956-1968 no ac. However did not start school until after Labor Day. Like that made a difference.

Our first was born in a blizzard in NYC, the second was born in mid August in Louisiana. This one is in mid August, but in Germany (during the hottest summer most can remember).

She deserves a little portable unit if she wants it.

My grandpa had an attic fan that would draw some serious air. Like walking under an airplane prop.

I went a couple of summers in BR without running the ac as I was a poor college student. I got used to it after a couple of weeks. The body will acclimate. Even these days we keep the ac set high.....It's 83 in my office right now and feels good.

After their renovation, my parents took their old attic fan and created a behemoth box fan out of it. They wanted to make two, but the other fan was broken beyond repair.

Pretty dang powerful, and I am sure not the only south LA resident to do so.

I haven't had an AC in my house since I left Louisiana.

I live in Seattle area now and very few houses have AC. It sucks during the summer sometimes but overall there really isn't a need for it unless you sleep during the day. Nights here get to 50-55 and it cools down the house.

Other than a few years in Alabama, I've never had A/C. Never really needed it. Thinking about buying a window unit though. It's been getting pretty damned hot the last few summers.

We always had electricity in our house, thank goodness.

I remember applying for a job at a New orleans public school and they wanted to hire me but warned me the school had no electricity

I politely declined. NO way did I get a degree so I could sweat my butt off teaching. Quite a few NOPS did not have A/C!! Scary !

Lived in Sicily for two years with no heat or air. All windows had these on them so you could get a breeze without the sun shining in.

I would guess that since they didn't know what ac was they adapted. Pretty sure all house had attic fans (not sure if this is accurate) and they kept their windows open at night. Sounds terrible to me

I grew up in Foley, Al back when it was mostly rural and we had no A/C. You don't miss it if you don't have it. I couldn't wait for school to start though. When I was stationed with 1/7 in Twenty nine Palms, our BN C/O did not allow a/c in any of the enlisted, staff nco or officers bachelors quarters because he felt it made the units weak and soft. He had a point; think about what our greatest generations did without a/c; built an entire nation from scrap, won two world wars, built rail roads and buildings that still stand to this day. What has the most current generations done? Invented the internet? Made minecraft and a bunch more computer software?

Growing up without A/C by DHS1997

Grew up in Michigan in the 60's and 70's.. Never had A/C.. In the summer when it was 85degrees...it was 85 degrees....No humidity.. Yes it got to 90+ at times but we just never needed air... Now when I moved back up there in the late 90's everyone had air... Global warming I guess..............

We would, during the Summer, take our pillows at night, run down the hallway to the living room where the window unit was located, hold up our pillows to cool them off, run back to bed and fall asleep on a cool pillow and at least once a Summer would bust my rear end on the green goop generated by the window unit when playing in the driveway
