Many of you will read this. Some of you will have the courage to repost it.

It's much like the Facebook cause of the week. A like or a share gives them the same gratification as if they actually did something meaningful.

The same goes for those people who donate money to an online cause.

"You gave someone $5. You didn't do anything."

That's like saying shite with corn is better than regular shite because it comes with vegetables.

You can go ahead and lump the "family surprised by their loved one returning home from war" that they do at so many sporting events. I think Deadspin did an article on it some time back and basically summed it up as being voyeurism, in which we derive some odd sense of pride watching these people fall al over themselves in a mixture of shock, grief, and joy.

I didn't mourn that child's death because I believe there has to be some personal connection to them, but that one hit me hard and I most definitely cried watching it. It had zero to do with showing anyone how human I am. It was a devastating video to watch.

It isn't the watching of the video that is an issue.

It is posting about or telling people that you watched it. It is the "prayers sent" posts.

That is where people derive their emotional orgasms from.

Like the Moscona thread on here. All those "prayers sent" posts are attention seeking.

They are meaningless and 99% of the people responding truthfully don't care.

Aren't you a logic thinking doctor? You know damn well that you can't make all or nothing blanket statements or even suggest "most" unless you can provide something that isn't purely anecdotal.

I have to agree. I share quite a bit about my son and our journey with his illness online. Mostly because I don't talk about it very much IRL. It's much easier for me to say how I feel or what is going on via a post than face to face with people who either don't understand or who also love him. I don't have to see anyone's faces or play to anyone's expectations. It is cathartic for me to speak about it in text much more so than to even acknowledge it in speech. I guess some people will say I want attention. What I really want is to lift the burden a bit. I don't have the opportunity to do that IRL. Just saying there can be other motivations.

I read the first paragraph and the last sentence...

That said, is it possible that someone happens upon something touching and sad and wish to make it better?

Exactly

And I didn't watch the video because a) I had no idea who that guy and baby were and b) I really don't feel like watching a dying baby on my free time

I hate that crap

I understand the man's loss and his grief but I don't want to experience it and I damn sure don't feel the need to share it.

Yeah what is that shite too? I will offer prayers to someone I know but watch grief porn then wallow in their misery and offer prayers for a stranger? No thanks

And why is that guy videotaping and sharing the most intensely private moment in his life?

WTF is wrong with people?

How do these things become viral? Did he share with family who then shared and it snowballed into a.news story?

I don't know but I will be damned if I am going to film a private moment and share the shite on facebook

And if he sent it to family or friends and they posted it without his permission then they are terrible

I agree. That was more than just an update or pic. Way too intimate to be shared IMO. I didn't watch.
