The officer clearly violates NYPD policy so he should have been disciplined by them at the very least.
I don't know a lot about this case so it's hard to comment on the GJ decision.

This is a much bigger deal than Michael Brown. It's infuriating and disturbing.

The New York Medical Examiner has ruled Garner's death a homicide. The cause of death was "compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police."
But the medical examiner also listed acute and chronic bronchial asthma, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease as contributing factors in Garner's death.

I don't think he should be charged with murder, that seemed ridiculous, but he did use a chokehold he wasn't supposed to and the man died.

infuriating disturbing is an understatement..outrageous and insane may be closer
cops are nuts, citizens apparently are as well
no excuse for attacking a non-violent, basically tax-evasion suspect in the 1st place...he's dead due to their actions, it's DEFINITELY at the very least negligent homicide...good grief

What's being lost in this shuffle is how absurd the law is to begin with - the law that requires arresting someone selling loose cigarettes rather than issuing citations or tickets. That's NYC for you these days.

Maybe the GJ saw other evidence for cause of death?
yea, they are now charging McDonald's for selling too many cheeseburgers to him in a one month period.

That is a great point. They are basically using the police as tax collectors in this case.

My two recommendations:
1) You want white people, collectively, to get engaged on these issues. At least I think so. There is way too much absurdity in MB for that to happen, but maybe a chance in situations like this. To me it is more about cops vs. citizens or cops vs. blacks than whites vs. blacks, but whatever.
My empathy reserve will always be low for some of these situations so long as black on white crime is treated as negligible or irrelevant by the black community, while simultaneously proclaiming that white people are some threat to young black men. The simple fact is that the average white person is more at risk in a heavily black neighborhood than vice versa. I'm not here to try and hammer that point home, but our engagement on your concerns should be met with the same from your community on our concerns. FWIW I don't like doing this us vs. you stuff, but just know I'm doing it for the convenience of clarity.
2) If you truly want to engage white people, engage us in "our" terms, to the extent you can boil white people down enough. That isn't me saying "oh, you have to do things our way," but if you're asking for our involvement in solving problems that impact you, then the practical thing to do is to invoke things that matter to us. Police overreach concerns are at their highest point in decades for people like me. The EG situation is an obvious example. But, if this becomes about white privilege in not being harassed by the cops or something similar, we're going to tune out. I'm not trying to dissuade you from speaking your mind, this is simply how I'd approach it tactically if I were someone on the other side looking to build a consensus.

i'm not taking a side, but this is much more questionable imo
This one isn't questionable imo. The cop is innocent of any wrong doing. His actions followed police procedure including the way he performed the choke hold. The problem here is with the law. The city is fully to blame for this. The parents should own this whole dam city.

break police policy and engage in a banned force
Is it banned. I heard the choke hold visible in the vid is policy.

I figured you would be in here with your misguided bullshite. You gonna get geaux00000 on my arse on this one too?

The problem is a lot of the anger about the MB situation is because of cases like this one.
Hanging your hat on such a ridiculous case such as M.B. lost all credibility in the average population.

In fact, I can think of 4 off the top of head within the last 6 months
Forget the heart applied numbers. Give me the head connected percentages. It begins to get a little hard for you here because you have to give me percentages based on the number of confrontations. Prison population tells you something here.
You want to make it fair? include number?percent of officers killed by black people.
quote:
Poor to little regard for blacks and Latinos from law enforcement.
You decide to include latinos in now? Legal or illegal? The census says they are in a different class.
I'm going to forego commentary on the rest of your typically incorrect tirade that was sent from the heart before passing through the head.
P.S.

From everything I've read, chokeholds are not permissible police force (at least according to NYPD regulations).

No! Choked yes, to death no. The guy was yelling that he can't breath. If you can yell, you can breath. Don't believe me try it at home. If the suspect had complied, he'd be alive.
True and the correct answer.
