J.C. Penney is closing its Cortana Mall location, shutting down one of the few remaining anchor stores in the shopping center at Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard.

The Cortana store is one of 138 locations that J.C. Penney will shut down beginning April 17. The store is expected to close by June. Two other Louisiana stores are also targeted for closure: the Slidell location in North Shore Square and one in DeRidder.

quote:

This is the third anchor store to close in Cortana since January 2016, joining Macy’s and Sears. J.C. Penney has been in Cortana since the mall opened in 1976.

quote:

The impending closure means that the mall will have four vacant anchor spaces. Along with J.C. Penney, Sears and Macy's, the former Mervyn's space has been empty since February 2006.

Cortana's remaining anchor tenants are Dillard's, which has reduced its presence to a clearance store that only takes up the first level, and Virginia College.

I'm actually surprised it was open.

JC Penny is closing down over 100 stores this quarter. I think the days of the enclosed mall is coming to an end especially with the growth of internet shopping.

Bon Marche part deaux. Many fun times in Cortana Mall as a kid. It has never been the same since Toys by Roy closed.

What does Mayor Broome's race team have to say about this? Is JC Penney's racist?

This is from an older article when they announced Sears was closing over there, but this gave me the lulz:

quote:

When Moonbeam bought Cortana, company officials said they believed that Baton Rouge was still a two-mall city and there was a future for the property as a discount shopping and entertainment destination. There was talk about bringing a movie theater to the Mervyn’s space.

Did they close the Chick Fil A there? I will go there occasionally and it is a ghost town. Sears looks like they are shutting down also.

The Walmart adjacent to Oak Villa is always packed and one of the worst ones in the city.

When a mall has to resort to calling an online college an "anchor tenant" the mall is history.

Auburn is losing its JCPenney's as well.

Tough day for the SEC West tigers, especially those in need of a pair of khakis at an honest price

Sounds like when Moonbeam bought Cortana for $6 million a few years ago, they were buying a big piece of shite.

Just curious - do people in these offices ever look back at dumb shite they buy and be like "Man, we're some pretty huge, stupid assholes..."

The best use of the property...being on a huge piece of land at the corner of two major highways...is probably some sort of distribution or flex space similar to the format of Industriaplex in Baton Rouge or Elmwood Park in Metarie.
