I am planning on getting back into mountain biking (I say that, but will be primarily riding trails around south LA). I have an old Cannondale that's on it's last legs so I need something a tad bit more updated. What are some good brands $600 or under that I should be looking at? Thinking a hard tail, front suspension will work just fine. I am definitely open to purchasing a used one just to get started. Any advice?

$600 bikes are eerily similar to $200 bikes FWIW

i've been a fan of cannondale since the 1980s but that's a bit of a stretch there.

How so? I dont disagree its a quality brand. But they have proprietary bullshite that isnt like pretty much every other brand. Its almost exactly Apple vs PC

Well then yes, its on its last leg

How far do you think you go with this? Mountain biking? if you think there is a chance to actually hit some trails regularly, I'd up your budget and looked used. $1k should get you into a sweet spot for a great hardtail

Probably just the weekends and I plan on hitting the BREC trails off of Hooper quite a bit. Like I said, just entry level. Don't want to spend more than I need to IF/until I actually get serious about it

shitty components fail on the trail, fast. Good entry level sram or shimano stuff usually puts you at around $1k in pretty much every brand.

what?

every major bike company has proprietary tech from the type of carbon weave to the geometry of the frame itself, etc.

cannondale doesn't do anything special the other guys aren't doing too.

Buy a used bike for $600 and you will have a bike that was $1200 new with a few scratches.
