There is nothing fake about this story.
There were and always are stupid side bets. So it adds up quickly. But yes, he will usually birdie the par 3s without fail

I've made bets with my father and lost. He's tried to turn down the money but I pay up. It's happened vice versa as well. Now we stick to non-monetary bets.

OP said there were side bets. OP lost $500 on the match play and $400 assuming there were four par 3's. Let's assume his dad got four birdies than the OP, that's another $200. So I guess OP lost another $400 in side bets.
