The best fried rice I ever had anywhere was at one of the stations along the railway (the old Burma RR) heading to Kanchanaburi on the River Kwai. I think it was the Wang Pho station. It was cooked by a man with using a wok over a propane burner and he could only cook one serving at a time, but it was worth waiting for. Doesn't sound like that's on your itinerary, though.

Patara is on our itinerary. We are going to a cooking class with Baanthai Cookery School.

Definitely hoping to get some diving in!

unfortunately for you the better diving is going to be on the gulf of Thailand side. Koh Tao is incredible.

I went diving in Phi Phi as well. It was great but the Andaman Sea side got shite rocked by the Tsunami and you can tell on a lot of the reef there.

Nicest people on the planet and the dollar goes a real long way. You can live like a king on the cheap or you can spend money just for the sake of spending money and not get much more.

I just wanted to hit on this some more. The Thais were genuinely nice and very trusting people...Surprisingly so. A lot of the activities we did required no deposit and no payment until the end of the day. Many activities in other countries want full prepayment months in advance.

Also, some people would brag about haggling down the price on something by 10 baht or so...Who cares? That's 33 cents to you but a lot to them. Also, if you tip at all, they are genuinely appreciative and don't act like a tip is something that is owed to them (as is the case in many parts of Asia...edited to clarify that they do not expect tips in many parts of Asia. In some places like Japan, they flat out won't accept them).

Um no. During high season RT air alone is $1400.

You read guide book type things that talk about how certain cultures see it as an "insult" if you don't do a bit of haggling in purchases, and I've often wondered if that's really nothing but a crock of shite for stuff like the above.

Don't be bitten by any of the damn monkeys. My sister got bit by one that jumped on her right next to a sign saying don't get bit.

The air fare is the only thing that's going to get you. You're going to be amazed at what things cost over there. I would eat an awesome lunch on the street in Bangkok for less than a dollar. Not because I had to budget, because it was awesome. Like anywhere else in the world, you can find places to spend lots of money, but I'm not sure why you'd want to anywhere in Thailand.

For those in the know. I'm planning a honeymoon in Thailand and my hang up is which side to be on.

I have no interest in Phuket. I know that's a trap.

I'm stuck between Krabi (Ko Lanta, etc) and Phi Phi on one side and Ko Samui on the other.

Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le are two different places. My readings on Phi Phi Le and Maya Bay (The movie The Beach) is that Maya Bay is a waste because its packed like a mother.

I mean, look at this shite show:

I've been thinking Ko Samui and the Angthong Marine Park instead.

Can't go wrong with either or what?

We're spending money on a couple of nice things, but for the most part, we're going pretty cheap.

Hotel on the beach in Patong wasn't cheap during peak season. And the Phi Phi sunrise tour was $120...but again was HIGHLY recommended because it's a very small tour instead of being herded like cattle.

$15 for hour long massages will be had every day!

I'm a woman, and I soooo want to do this because I'm very hard to fit. But I don't think I'll have time. Most things I've read say that they like you to have 3 fittings. I won't be in one place long enough.

That's the reason that I'm going on a sunrise tour. It leaves at 5:30 a.m....but you beat the crowds!

Ya, I've read about the overnight tours as well, where you will be on a boat overnight (apparently you can't stay on the island over night) so you can be first on the beach without the travel time to get there.

Not sure if the effort is worth it, but its famous for a reason too.

I never saw a crowd like that. Must be the peak of the high season. There was no more than 10 other people on that beach when I was there. Phi Phi Le, where Maya Beach is, is completely uninhabited besides a few camping trips. There are no businesses or hotels on the island. You take a 20 minute boat ride form Phi Phi Don.

I loved Phi Phi. I loved Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Koh Samui was a little too built up for my tastes but it was nice too. If you're looking for the huge limestone cliffs that come straight out of the water like in the Phi Phi pictures, you're going to find that on the Andaman Sea side. The Diving is better on the Gulf of Thailand side if you all are doing that. The party/backpacker scene is probably bigger on the gulf of Thailand side. The full moon party and all that are Koh Phangan.

I liked Phi Phi more.

Ya, we will be there in peakish season in December of next year (So I have plenty of time to plan). We'll also be there at the time of the full moon party but might want to avoid that event though I love a good booze fest. Hard to weigh it out.

I'm also booking most of this trip with points if I can, hence some of the island place choices. But I'm flexible as well. I'll easily be able to book Bangkok and Angkor Wat hotels on points and airfare of course.

We decided early on to skip the full moon party. We're just not there long enough to end up wasting a full day feeling like crap and being hungover. Also, we're 2 women traveling alone, and it just didn't seem like a good situation to put ourselves into.
