That's actually really good--on both fronts.

I got it. Upper 300s and 16% of base salary is very reasonable and something I'd be proud of.

I basically bought a slightly larger version of the house I grew up in (just 400 miles away). I practically stole it. I bought at the bottom of the market and got an incredible interest rate.

I sought out a safe neighborhood in a good school district. I could sell this house very easily right now....and I probably will this summer since it looks like we are moving.

I'm going to miss this house.

My Dad used to say that you can't tell how much money a person has by what they have, you can only tell how much money they don't have anymore.

Hell, I have been seriously considering a "tiny" house. I won't live in a 200 sq ft like some people do but I have been looking at some options.

Some of these look really cool. I could do something 600-800 sq. ft.

While we could've gone significantly higher and were approved to do so, we opted for more discretionary income for play or savings

The recession would have been much more mild if the rest of America thought like you. This is not the dark side, it's the side of sound judgment.

Errr body around here is buying new stucco french villa looking homes that are clustered together real close and instead we opted to buy an older all brick home with popcorn ceilings and the whole 9 yards. We saved around $40k when compared to a newer style home of the same size.

We got to do a lot of customizations to make the home fit our needs and get to take advantage of having trees, larger, flatter yards, and a more established neighborhood.

Saved some money on top of that. Our mortgage is 14% of gross but we have spent money here and there on renovations. The next one is building out a master bath suite. When all is said and done the costs will even out but I definitely recommend going the route we went.
