A craton is the stable root of a continent. In that, the oldest rock is the rock that first helped for providing vokume to the craton and is igneous or metamorphic. If this rock is exposed at the surface it is called shoeld. If the shield is covered by sedimenary rocks that is the platform, and still considered part of the craton.
The craton/shield was initially made by oceanic plates colliding and island chains forming deep wells of igneous rocks.

Makes me wonder the the earth is expanding over time as in if the circumference is slowly getting longer. I’ve read that may be the case, over geologic time frames.
