Did you write all that for a school report?

Well I see my thoughts on this podcast series are a hit with the OT ans are sparking an interesting discussion. Awesome.
Me, I look at things like the timing of the choice to open the Eastern Front, coupled with the failure of the Germans to follow Dunkirk with a full scale invasion of Britain, as cosmic blunders that cost them the war. I tend to see God's hand in things like these, but then I look at the world through theological lenses so for me that makes perfect sense. I know not everyone has that same worldview.

I should have clarified that I liked Part I and I agree for the most part with Darth's opinion.
I'm glad to have the chance to clarify.
There was another thread about history podcasts and somebody linked this thread, which I hadn't seen before. That's why it's an extreme bump.
PS That 18 part Russian-made podcast about the War in the East seems entertaining. I watched the first part. I didn't like they way that they used the wrong German tank in their videos about the 1941 fighting. The tank showed is a Panzer III with the L/60 50mm main gun. That tank didn't appear on the battlefield until 1942. Still, it looks like entertaining popular history that provides an overview of that war. It's made by the Russians, so, it has some minor inaccuracies that benefit the Russians.

I wish he would've discussed the Black Sea more and the US involvement in supplying the besieged city of Leningrad.
I had the same effect with Blueprint for Armageddon. He kept saying he wished he could spend more time on Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Well Dan, you had 24 hours. How was that not enough time? He spent at least 3 hrs of the series essentially just telling the audience how shitty things were. He spent like 3 hours on one naval battle.
Anyway, it is a very good "complaint" to have that you leave the audience wanting more.

The Brits had a navy and they had an air force. Both were strong enough to keep the British home island safe from German invasion.

Agree for a first timer its a good listen but for anyone who reads and researches ww2 it will be boring and almost comical as he takes forever to build up a shocker from mundane common knowledge of the front. That said I can't listen to a 5 hour podcast although the cold war episode is good but I am just starting to learn about it.

I would be interested to read more about people's impressions of his podcasts dealing with Ancient Rome, for example. A topic like WW2 has mountains of documents in the historical record, much of it only revealed recently from old Soviet archives. A podcast can't hope to provide a thorough analysis of what happened then, because the subject is too vast, complicated and too well documented.
However, with a topic like Ancient Rome, the historical record isn't so well documented and well known. Seems to me that Ancient Rome would be a better topic for four podcasts.

I liked GotO mainly because I'm profoundly intrigued in the Eastern Front and its sheet scale, as well as the horror of the human experience during that period of time in places like Russia, Belarussia, Poland, the Ukraine, and east Germany. However, it definitely left me wanting more and feeling like Carlin almost didn't do it justice given the potential of podcasting as a medium.
As odd as it sounds, his Blueprint For Armageddon series sort of left me with a sour taste in my mouth for what might have been with GotO. He spent multiple hours each episode in BFA exploring the battles and the corresponding human psychological experience in more depth.

quote:Yes. And I'm sorry for the distraction. I think the OP laid out an interesting window into the podcast, even if at a mostly Freshman level overview of the Eastern front.

I agree and I would call it an introductory course for the Soviet-Nazi War. It's supposed to be an inspiration to learn more by reading books. One must read books because that's where the details are.
