No, but if they aren't trained in de-escalation techniques specifically related to manic episodes, why is their first instinct to use weaponry to subdue people? Do you think that works?

I think deadly force should be the last result in all scenarios, but I also realize most of these decisions have to be made within seconds.
I don't think police should be dealing with mental health patients. Not unless they are highly trained and properly compensated for it.

From 2010-2019, 20 police were killed by their own weapon. In 11 of those instances the perp also stole the officers weapon. In the other 9, the weapon was not stolen.

That's not what I'm seeing in my own database, which counts 5 incidents of an unarmed person reaching for an officers gun. What dataset are you using?

I mean, I agree. The vast majority of police shootings are due to armed individuals. Even cases with toy guns I can understand. But completely unarmed individuals I'm militantly against.

From my own experience, I don't think they are equipped to handle mental health episodes, and its insane to me that we've delegated that task to them.

The NCJRS database? I'm using a database that compiles data from those documents and I'm only finding 5 cases, with the prerequisite that the suspect was described as unarmed at the beginning of the encounter.

Very few are equipped for mental health issues. I'm not really sure how we solve that issue either.
