I've lived in a travel trailer for over a year now and will for the next 2 years. It's been really easy so far and it's a great way to save money

Edit: I have a wife and a 4 year old, we are mostly stationary

Yeah, my poor kids. Living in beach towns, mountains out their window, Seeing family around the country. I don't know if they will be able to stand it.

Exactly. Just go for it and don't listen to these jerks that aren't even living life. You have to make the very best of your time on this earth.

I love your enthusiasm. My wife and I have a bullseye on the calendar in 8 years when both our boys are in college. She's can be a travelling nurse and i can do IT consulting on the road.

We love to travel now...just spent 2 weeks on the West coast with our boys. Vegas, LA, San Fran. They loved it too. We camp alot so that wouldn't be anything new.

However, I couldn't deprive them of setting down roots in the same small town where they've been growing up. They'd miss their friends, not to mention the maturation process through being part of Scouts, sports teams, school groups, etc. They do go to public schools.

So, my wife and I will have to wait and continue to dream about that day when we are on our own on the road. Good luck with whatever direction you choose.

I don't know what kind of family these people grew up with. I enjoy my kids. I have never thought of them as a burden. Maybe it is because I am an older parent. My kids like being with us also.

They would do like most people. Travel on their own as adults instead of getting drug around the country by their parents living in a mini house on wheels with only each other as friends.

Who cares what people think. Do it if you want. I did a quick google, and there are plenty of blogs covering the subject.

See you are only looking at it from your perspective. You must not be able to remember what it's like to be a teenager and want to have friends and be accepted by them. And to have their own space and privacy.

And right now you are selling this to a 6 and 10 year old. I would guess if your kid was already 14-15 and you proposed this they would not be for it.

Like others said.....seems more selfish on your part so that you can have the life YOU want

Well I am not going to make them do it if they don't want to. We will see if they want to in 3 years. If they do, it's on. All kids are not the same, you people just think what you know is normal. If I remember correctly, your upbringing wasn't so great.

And there are NO tropes in stories about how kids hate that they can't make lasting friendships, and in extreme cases withdraw socially to spare the pain of parting.

Not saying it can't be done and everything be fine.

But it's reading like you being selfish as hell downplaying the effect it'll have on them.

And festering resentment in an RV with next to no personal place for some pre teens to angst in private?

Nah.

Nothing can go wrong with that.

Carry on.

I grew up poor. But I got to go to a decent public school that promoted education. I lived in the same house growing up as a child so got to have friends that I grew up with. I got to go to middle school and high school with many of these friends. And remain good friends with some of those people decades later.

Yeah being poor sucked.... but at least I was able to have the normalcy of being able to have my friends as a support system those years.

And I held on to a huge amount of anger towards my parents when I was a teenager/young adult because their poor choices affected my life greatly(my dad giving up a free ride to college because of his disability, my parents having 4 kids when they could not really afford 2, etc).

If I were you, I would buy an inexpensive used travel trailer for now and start some weekend trips. You don't even have to go far to get to some great places. That will give ya'll a chance to really see how you like it and how you work together to get things done.

By trying it out a bit, you can also figure out what you really want when it comes time to make the big purchase.

Really, not many kids would prefer to spend 7 hours a day in school rather than traveling to incredible places and doing things other kids only get to do on a few weeks of vacation (and many kids don't even get that).

Homeschooling only takes few hours a day anyway, if that. many online schools are excellent and your kid learns at their own pace (and are usually ahead of their peers). Plus they learn independence and how to manage studying and school work on their own.

I would also get the kids input on places they would like to see or go. (I'm ready to go mining for diamonds in Arkansas and my SO is ready to go to the Florida Keys). By getting them more invested in it, they will be more excited and motivated to go.

I say go for it and leave all the haters and their objections of abuse and misery behind.

I doubt these kids would understand calculus/physics/chemistry thru homeschooling (especially via the Internet classes) like they would if they were in an actual school. But I'm sure some of you will say "the homeschool in an RV will teach them how to light a propane tank, so that's chemistry" and I'm sure you will park in Quebec for the summer to have your kids learn French.

So you plan on parking the RV for three or four years at a time? Military brats don't pick up and move multiple times a year. That's nothing like being a military brat.

55 year old dad will be a blast for your teenagers to hang out with in the RV because you know, they won't have friends to hang out with.

The teacher in front of a chalk board is a fast dying concept, for many high school and college students today calculus and other mathematics are taught in math labs, using online lessons. Ask any student today where they go if they don't understand a math problem, the answer will be Kahnacademy.com. The same resources are available to homeschoolers anywhere they may be in the world.
