Good job. You said it was your first using oils, what do you usually use, acrylic?

I’ve been keeping up with my builds in 2023. Right now I’m working on number 22 of the year, the Airfix 1:35 scale Pzkpfw IV Ausf. H…

Looks really good. How long have you been building?

Thanks! Off on for a while. Maybe altogether 15 years or so, but took a break for about 10 years and started back into it last year.

No, I painted the Tiger in enamels. Then I’d gloss coat it and use oils for weathering. See my Wildcat below thatI posted earlier - painted with lacquers and weathered with oils. I had never used anything to weather like that. Now I had used pin washes for panel lines, etc., but that was the first attempt at more extreme weathering. Now since my favorite enamels are no longer made, I use lacquer paints. Incredible paints!

Complete time from beginning build or just the weathering? My models usually take longer than normal because I don't work on them every night so I can't really give it a time. Now painting is different. I'll do the primer first and let it dry for a day, and then the base coat and let dry another day, too. Although now the lacquers I used are cured before that, I guess old habits die hard. Depending on what I'm doing as in weathering, etc, I may paint in layers, so each will get a day's drying time. And there are models that have more than one color - like the tri-color camo used on WWII Corsairs, Hellcats, etc. Then I will use Future floor polish for a gloss coat for decals. Great thing about that is that thinners wont attack it once cured.

I've really started using oils again on everything - even aircraft as they are excellent at tonal differences, etc. But that's the last step aside from a panel line wash and all that gets another day or so before final coat.

I'm a big fan of Micahel Rinaldi's Oil Paint Rendering (OPR) videos on Youtube. His books are excellent.

It’s simple. Go to this website…

postimages.org

Select “choose images”, it pulls up your photos on your device, select the images you want to upload, click “add” at the top right of the screen, the picture then uploads to the site. All you do then is click to copy the “direct link” under the picture. You come here and click “Img” on the create post screen and paste the copied link in the pop-up box.
