No reasonable, sane person would say their isn't an issue with these agencies. I just don't think the bull in the china shop approach is good for anyone. In fact, if you're looking for criminal prosecutions, this approach could very well endanger the ability to bring them. I think it will also have a chilling affect on the federal government's ability to hire the quality employees in the future, which I suspect is partly behind this entire thing - private industry wanting to eliminate hiring competition for those folks.

I'll just give an example from one field: my wife worked in career services for an SEC college of engineering. Students were routinely presented with job offers from federal agencies such as NSA, DIA, HS, etc., as well as from private industry, particularly computer science types. The pay ceiling for the gov jobs wasn't a high and a lot of times the cost of living expenses for the gov job locations was much higher. Benefits and stability were major factors for those students who took the jobs with the federal gov.

Now that those factors are in limbo, they'd be more likely to take the private sector job and you have the second, third, and forth choices analyzing Osama's phone calls to the Ayatollah Assahola for you.

I don't assume that all federal workers are crooks and should be let go en masse, because that's simply illogical. I agree that the government is bloated, that there is fat to be trimmed, and expenditures to be scrutinized, but, again, don't think the bull in the china shop approach or this French Revolution style mob bent on revenge and destruction is beneficial to the nation.
