From a criminal standpoint, Louisiana shouldn’t have one standard juvenile age

“Juvenile” should be based on the underlying stats within the parish/city/precinct where the individual is from.
Areas with awful crime rates where people “grow up” quicker both in terms of physical development and tough “street experience” things they are exposed to: anyone 15 or older should be considered an adult from a criminal perspective. A 15 year old in the worst precinct in NOLA is more physically developed and “street smart” experienced than a 15 year old from Mandeville.
Areas with lower crime rates and generally more functional community: we can keep the age at 17 as it currently stands.
This would do a few things:
1) it will hopefully incentivize parents in bad areas to keep better tabs on their kids, since being tried as an adult brings steeper sentencing than as a juvenile
2) if number 1 fails, it would still result in more 15 and 16 year olds in problematic areas of the state to be nailed by the courts during criminal sentencing

While rehab attempts should be stronger with Juveniles... the mollycoddling, shielding their identities and basically get out of jail free cards needs to end. Most especially for crimes of violence.

Would that seriously pass 14th Amendment scrutiny? Especially if you consider the racial demographics of who usually lives in ghettoes and who lives in nicer areas?
I do think that juvenile offenders as a whole need to get harsher treatment, though.

The problem is it’s really hard to police and punish dumb people. Young thugs are dumber than a box of rocks. And I highly doubt anyone that young has any real street smarts. They obviously do pick up and gravitate toward the trash culture that they are raised in.
The culture is what needs to be punished and eliminated, not the people.

I think it should be related to the nature of the crime. Minor burglary should not be treated the same as any kind of violent crime.
