Arturo Fuente is a good place to start. Try the 8-5-8. You can find them on just about any cigar site or in most shops.

I splurged on one of those as a birthday present one time because I had seen so many raves about it. I couldn’t even finish it (one of the few ever). Is my palette shite or something?

I not only survived but finished a Joya de Nicaragua Antano Dark Corojo, yet couldn’t stomach one of those lil Opus Xes.

No. The Opus X is very strong. It’s definitely not for everyone. And like any cigar, if not stored properly it can get bad. Everything else being equal, it’s widely regarded as one of the best non-Cuban cigar, if you can find one.

A Camacho Triple Maduro kicked my arse last weekend. I finished it sort of. But was feeling it.

It is strong, in my 23 years of cigars I have only had two. I found them too strong, almost like they were simply trying to prove that there could be extra-strong nicotine bombs from the Dominican Republic. They receive praise because with Opus X, Fuente had the first success in growing wrapper leaf in the Dominican Republic. That in itself was a triumph and justly drew praise.

They also put their best tobaccos into Opus and their best rollers make them.

I and a few of my close cigar friends simply don't like them. Add to that the price-point and it's simply not worth it, to me.

Smoke what you like and like what you smoke.

OK, so we got the anchor, not certain why. I guess there goes my tier rating.

Do a little bit of reading around the internet. Do not confine yourself to cigar Aficionado although it's a stellar publication. You will not taste "hints of late-season dried apricots" or a "pencil-lead note" right off. I've been enjoying this a long time, now and still have an untrained palate.

Conventional wisdom indicates that you start with cigars that have a light-colored wrapper leaf (capa) usually a shade-grown leaf, often called Connecticut as that's where it's grown, but also grown in Ecuador. These tend to mild smokes that shouldn't give you a huge nicotine burst.

I suggest you look for the following brands and lines:
Macanudo: their original line with the light green band. Always consistent, very mild but with a subtle flavor.

H. Upmann regular line (red band)
Leon Jimenes if you can find them
Cuesta-Rey
Sosa regular line
Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 (previously mentioned) has a Cameroon-grown wrapper, but it mild enough and always reliable
La Aurora, regular line, also with Cameroon, but not strong and tasty.
Diamond Crown-much more expensive and you'll get spoiled!

Best to you.
