Ford Performance claims its 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will rocket down a quarter-mile faster than the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon by more than a second, but it won’t be able to taunt anyone past the exit sign to the drag strip. Its monstrous supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 won’t be street legal.

But with a name like “Cobra Jet,” it’s not like this thing has to be street legal. The name itself is scary enough to keep people from coming back through the track gates and into the Cobra Jet’s legal territory.

Woo-hoo Ford. It isn't street legal and they can't challenge the Challenger SRT Demon.

OEM's, especially Ford, are getting into the purpose-built racecar business.

You can buy an already-sorted car, take it to the track, and win.

Pretty cool deal IMO.

Thats pretty crazy and woo hoo worthy.

99.9% of cars running mid 8s arent street legal anyway

Cobra Jets were produced within the last 10 years or so. I’m all for car companies doing this, Cup cars, etc.

An 8 sec car that is fully NHRA/IHRA compliant is serious. That said the 6 figures it will command is steep.

The Demon isn't great on the streets and isn't fully tack compliant so it is a rather odd choice to build.

The latest Copo camaros were available with multiple engine choices for different classes. Ford should have that option too.

Love the cars, but I wish they would refresh the front end

About right for a turn-key car that is track ready. Friend had a legit 8-second street car and it approached 6-figures and needed constant maintenance.

Kind of against what amateur strip racing is meant to be in my opinion.

Build a car in your garage. Race it. Tweak it. Race it.

Meh.

Buy car, buy parts, let someone else build it

Breaks something and oils down the track too.

The ones they did 10 years ago weren’t street legal either. We’re the OG cobra jets street legal?

ETA I know that the cobra jet motor was offered in cars in the 60s, but I thought they made purpose built cobra jet drag cars then too.

You still have to have the skill to drive and hit the lights right. Just writing a check isn't going to get you a trophy.

FWIW, I was thinking of more of the old Cobra R cars which were built more for the SCCA stuff.

While Ford did campaign CJs in Super Stock they were indeed street legal cars.

They were mid-11 cars at the track but that was wicked fast in the late 70s for a stock car.

I've built junkyard motors that made 100 passes and were still running fine and grenaded a Gene Fulton motor on the third pass before every turning up the wick.

Even a big manufacturer turn key isn't a recipe for no disaster.
