Solid batteries are coming along in smaller form factors right now, though they can't yet outcompete lithium batteries from a price -to-performance just yet.
I like our Tesla but it's hard to get away from the feeling of knowing you're driving a car filled to the brim with 50,000 AA batteries.

That doesn't "feel" like progress to me. Feels like the same old tech just cheap enough now to....stuff 50,000 of them into the vehicle lining to get the car to go 250 miles.

Whenever the government "invests" in a project or technology (mass transit, EVs, etc) it is an admission that the market does not support it and it is a money loser. Otherwise, capitalists and entrepreneurs would be knifing each other in the back to be the first in the door of this new venture. By getting John Q Citizen to fund it, they and their political reap the rewards without any of the risk.

These DOE programs require private co-investment. Typically DOE won't consider applications that don't have about 50% of the project equity coming from the sponsor or independent investment.

And for the ones that go tits up, the DOE is first in line for repayment and the private investors get hosed.

Give those some time and I think we will see drastic changes in EV ranges and charge times.

I've read that Toyota is working on battery technology that will charge 60% in 15 minutes. That is what is needed.

Ram is supposed to do something in their next generation 1500 with an electric drive truck that has the famed Pentastar V6 acting only as a generator to recharge the battery.

Ram already has what they call a "mild hybrid" with their etorque models.

I've probably bought my last Ram since they are getting rid of the Hemi.
