Iceland seriously sucked in the winter.
Summer was great.I had a 4 day weekend every other weekend,I traveled all over the country my 4 days off.Had some gorgeous women and they were very friendly away from the base.
Some guys never left the base their whole year there.

I spent 22 months Rota Spain, enjoyed that immensely.

Bragg both the best and worst, All Americans rarely leave.

TDY worst was Fort Leonard Wood aka Lost in the Woods. Piney Valley golf course was nice back then possibly because the CG and his wife were big golfers. They had the first TT on Saturdays before the first official TT that we usually had. They played quick but we always made damn sure we didn't accidentally hit into them. My first and only hole in one was on #12 there. St Robert was a shitty little military town and KC and St Louis were a trek to party.

best TDY was Ft. Belvoir

For some reason 29 palms gets a lot of hate but I thought it was pretty awesome.

Main side is compact and everything is walking distance. Training grounds are nice and amenities are legit. It’s either hot and dry or cold and dry. No rain, no ticks. I’d go back.

Best: GTMO (a month into our year there, the section chief admitted he couldn't do the job and they had to ask me to do it; sure, here are my conditions; they agreed; can't believe they did; had the easiest tour of anyone on those 42 square miles)

Worst: tie -- Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and whatever the hell that staging base was in Kuwait (hottest place on the planet)

Hell Spiff…I just played there two weeks ago. Play every year before our Fripp Vacation. Some of the best kept golf course secrets in SC are Parris and the Fripp courses.
m

It’s a top mil golf course in the States. Love it. Second fave is the one in Pax River. Hit me up next time you play there and if I’m able I head over

My sister and her husband were in Rota for three years. The lived off base in a villa with a maid and a gardener. Like you say, most Americans never left the base. MWR had lots of great activities and excursions. Most were sparsely attended.

Earackson Air Station.

Shemya right? An older coworker at a former job was stationed there in the sixties. Maybe some of it was tall tales but he made it sound like the island of lost souls. The wind howled all the time. The beach was off limits because rogue waves could wash you out to sea. No trees, and no animals except birds and some rodents. The rec hall burned down so there was even less to do. An airliner made an emergency landing and they posted armed guards to keep guys from trying to stow away. After a year he got orders for Vietnam and considered himself lucky.

Worst was probably just boot camp and A School. Went to Great Lakes in the early 90’s and became a Corpsman. After being selected for SF, I loved my time in Germany. I really loved taking the train to Prague to live it up. So easy and cheap to get around in Europe.

Worst. Ft. Polk with Leesville (diseaseville) for nearby recreation.

Best. Geilenkirchen, West Germany. Luftwaffe base with a small American detachment. 100 clicks kinda west of Koln. Could drive, or train, anywhere in western Europe.
