I mean I get Shreveport because of Barksdale, and BR, and NOLA.. but why in the hell would anyone want to bomb Monroe, Lake Charles, or Laffy? Or there are areas in East TX that don't make sense.. what is there of strategic importance?
Also a bomb going off in Jackson MS, might actually improve things..

Grew up in Shreveport. BAFB was definitely gonna be one of the first things hit, so I had the comfort of knowing I was going up in a bright, blinding flash of light and wasn't going to have to endure nuclear winter.

What are the targets under the big masses of black dots? Clusters of ICBM silos?
Look up US Nuclear Sponge. The Government intentionally concentrated silos in the flyover states in an effort to absorb the Russian nuclear armament in areas that were less densely populated.

Suburban DC between the Pentagon and Ft Belvoir. We’d never have known what hit us.

Louisville is right next to ft.knox

Is this based on declassified Soviet files, or our assumptions about what they would hit?

There was a documentary about that incident I really enjoyed. It’s a trip. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it

I think Bogalusa was a prime target.

Don’t know. Probably a bit of both.
The organizations that put the map together are cited in the lower left hand corner.

You just had to hide under your desk and cover your head.

A lot of oil refineries—infrastructure.

I still love seeing that disgusting overrun shelter at West End and Robert E Lee. I think a homeless man used to live there.

Chattanooga is surrounded by 3 black dots.

Makes you want to move to Idaho or Eastern Oregon.

Greece joined NATO in 1952. They probably would not have liked this map too much.

In the followup waves they would just be looking for targets that hadn't already been hit. There doesn't have to be any logic to it. TBH after the forst 20 million dead, anything else would just be running up the score.

Strategic targets near every bridge and levee site along the Mississippi and Ohio River. Effectively cuts off north to south and east to west traffic, as well as flooding the entire river deltas. Pipelines and petroleum seem to be a common theme as well. I’m impressed, these guys did their research.
