Following up on job interviews

I had a job interview a week ago that surprisingly went great. At the end, they told me "it will be a few weeks" before they finish the interview process and will let me know either way. Several people are telling me that I need to follow up with them. I feel like that's being a nuisance since I was given a time frame and it's only been a week. For those of you in HR and management, is following up/not following up considered to be that big of deal?

Send a handwritten thank you note as a follow up. Good way to keep you in their mind without being overly pushy.

You ALWAYS follow up.
Also, no word for an entire week isn't a great sign.

Normally I'd say wait a week to call just to touch base and inquire about the process, but since they gave you the "few weeks" time frame, I doubt waiting two weeks from the day to touch base would hurt your chances at all.

I was about to write the exact same advice.

I always send and thank you email along with a question along the lines of when I can expect to hear back from them.

Not in HR, but I would wait one more week and then send out a feeler email to see what kind of response you receive back. If they respond fairly quickly, there is a good chance that you are in the mix so to say. If it takes awhile to get a response, then it is more than likely a possibility that they found another candidate, but sometimes a company will take months to make a decision.

Show up at the interviewers house at night unannounced, that will prove your dedication and go a long way to set you apart from the other candidates.

Always, ALWAYS send them a bottle of good scotch after the interview. Also you will get major bonus points for bringing the scotch to the interview and suggesting having a few drinks before you begin

I don't think hand written notes are common nowadays. I would recommend an email.

I call from the lobby right after the interview.

I would usually think the same thing. But they told me it will be a few weeks before I hear anything. They called me five months after applying so this place obviously has a slow hiring process (it's a plant, most of them do).

I guess it could be a way to differentiate yourself if that's what you're saying.

I've heard back from a company as long as 5-6 weeks after interviewing, without following up.

Most plants are very slow in the hiring process, but some of my friends that work in plants say that if you are actually called in for an interview, you are in the mix

Follow up six days after with an email or a phone call. Always follow up.

Yes, always a handwritten thank you. At the least, an email.
My current job I didnt hear back for about 3.5 weeks. I almost forgot about them, and then I got a call for a second interview. Day after second interview I was offered a job.

Already waited too long. You blew it.

Just walk into the place, jump over the counter, punch the guy who is current cooking the fries and take over the spot. McD's loves to see an employee who takes charge.
