Google, and my wife's OBGYN, disagree with you.

But let's hear your reasoning.

I wound up catching a strain of the flu not included in that years vaccine and I seriously thought I was going to die.

That sucks. I have only had it the one time last year, and I have had hangovers that were worse, a lot worse. I guess it's different strains and affects people differently. I've also never had strep throat or anything too major like that.

Yes.

It is free, so I see no reason not to.

I have never gotten the shot, only because I hate needles and avoid them at all costs.

Yes, it is very uncommon. As in it doesn't happen.

You can feel "weird" from it, but you don't actually get influenza. That's not how it works.

ETA:

I was reading this as you saying the flu shot gives people the flu. A myth I hear ALL the damn time.

False

True. The flu vaccine (like many others) has been linked to autism in children. This vaccine will still effect the child even if not administered directly.

I guess it's okay for moms to drink alcohol and smoke crack while pregnant, too?

The risk of harm to the baby is exponentially worse if the mother gets the flu versus the flu shot.

They have one recent study saying there could be side effects of the shot on the baby, but the study even says that the risk is greater from the actual flu.

Never had a flu shot and I've only been sick once with the flu, it wasn't that bad.

And for the question in the OP, yes I get the flu shot.

The chances of the actual strain you're at risk for being in the shot are pretty low, like 20-50% or something, but that's still better than nothing.

No reason not to.

Don't forget that TDAP while you're at it.

THIS. Pertussis (whooping cough) is on the rise in certain areas. We've had babies die in AZ that likely got pertussis from their family (one in particular was likely the father) that weren't up to date on their vaccines.

The vaccine you got as a child that protects against pertussis wears off as you get older. You need a booster shot. You likely at some point are due for a tetanus booster shot so might as well get the TDAP since it covers tetanus as well.

Babies have no protection against pertussis until they are old enough to get the vaccine series. Most of the deaths associated with pertussis....are babies under a year old. While pertussis may not kill a healthy older child or adult....it can be deadly to a young baby.

And I know for a fact he is correct, I thought I was gonna die four years ago with the flu and I always get the shot
