PALM HARBOR — A 26-year Palm Harbor man has been charged with manslaughter after he pointed what he thought was an unloaded rifle at his friend and pulled the trigger, shooting him in the chest, deputies say.

The shooting happened about 7:45 p.m. Thursday when Shea Michael Harkins pointed a Colt M4 rifle at 26-year-old Sean Cook on the 3300 block of Brian Road South, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Cook, of Clearwater, had come to the house to play video games with Harkins.

Harkins told deputies that while the two friends were in an upstairs bedroom of the home, Harkins retrieved the rifle he had been customizing and pointed it at Cook as a joke.

Harkins told deputies that Cook said, “What are you going to do, shoot me?”

Really sad. Two individual lives and families ruined for a lack of simple gun safety and common sense. Tragic event. God be with the two of them and their families.

Lol, definitely not an alter.

It happens sometimes and yes, it is a little weird.

I knew two guys this happened to their senior year in high school. Best friends, teammates, the whole nine yards.

Boy that was killed (Sr. Class President and just an all around terrific individual) was sitting on a sofa between two chicks at a Christmas party at his house. Best friend went into kitchen to get a fresh brew, saw a .357 mag laying on top of fridge, came out told his friend to look up. Asked if the gun was loaded. best friend said it's his Dad's and he NEVER keeps it loaded.

What he didn't know is his Dad had been at the gun range that day and had gotten a page (he was a Dr. and had gotten a call in for an ER patient) so in his haste to leave he hadn't unloaded the pistol. His buddy proceeded to pull the trigger, blowing his best friends brains out all over the couch and the two girls sitting there.

Kicker to the story....the guy that pulled the trigger (and one of the fummiest guys you would ever meet) wound up being a comedian and was a regular on the John Boy and Billy Show, until he passed a few years back.

I would like to think his buddy was waiting for him with a cold one at the Pearly Gates to let him know he never harbored any ill will about it.
