Is there a way to determine if you have sleep apnea without getting tested for it?
Testing is the only definitive way.
Good news is they make several home sleep apnea tests that for most people are appropriate.
If you don't want to go through your provider, sleep med doctor or insurance, you can actually order one of the WatchPat devices from Amazon for $200 and get tested.

was diagnosed with sleep apnea and recorded a whooping 70 events per hour.
Welcome to the club. I did my first sleep study last month and had 74 AHI. I got an auto CPAP machine as well and now my AHI is usually in a range of 4-7.
My problem is I keep waking up after 3 or 4 hours and I take the mask off and most of the time I don't even remember doing it.
What happens is that alot of air will be leaking from the side which will wake me up. The doctor had prescribed a pressure range of 10-20. I think when it gets around 14 or so is when air will leak and wake me up.
I manually changed the settings so the range is 10-13 range and my AHI is ~5 and usually I don't wake up.
Which mask are you using? I've always been a heavy snorer and just went full mask. Though I'm tempted to try another type.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea many years ago. I tried the cpap but never got used to it. On a whim, I bought a “side sleeper” pillow that is firm and never looked back. I have to buy a new one every six months or so but even my wife comments on how I stopped snoring.

yeah but how much do u weigh?
Edit... I've been trying to stick to a permanent meal plan for several years. I do good for 4 months at 1500 cal/day, then I fall off the wagon back to 1800 to 2200 cal/day. weight fluctuations between 200 and 230. I do 20 minute treadmill cardio 3 to 4 times per week.
My point is, my diet didn't change when I started CPAP, but I packed on weight immediately. I think most people lose weight on CPAP because of good rest, but many people gain weight. Your mileage may vary.

When your blood 02 levels fall, your brain responds by gasping for air. That's the difference between normal snoring and apnea snoring... that snort/gasp for air.

Damn! How are you not dead? edit... Sorry, I mistakenly read this as 179 per hour. 30 per hour still needs help.

Just to clarify...the conclusion was 30.8 events per hour of sleep
Which indicates severe sleep apnea .....thats what they are saying
They are recommending a CPAP or APAP

shite I just thought I had it bad. I was having 30 events/minute and my oxygen levels dropped to like 85%. Can’t remember exactly. I just know I was feeling like shite.
My advice is find the most comfortable mask you can find. I have the one that covers the mouth and sits under the nose, but still blows in my nose. It takes a month or so to get used to, but my life is amazingly better during the day. I feel so much sharper.
Didn’t lose any weight though. Actually gained 7 or 8 lbs.

Most important thing I can tell you to do is to ensure you use a humidifier with it.
Posted on 10/16/21 at 3:56 pm to baileydude
Well that's another situation, the humidifier. I put mine on auto and it got the air to warm on the 2nd night an caused my throat to start a drip...I need it to be room temp not warm or not freezing. Either way I'll get issues....what's your setting for the humidifier?

Get the ResMed10 and *SET EPAP TO 5*
This will decrease the pressure when you exhale so it doesn’t feel like you are Fricking suffocating.
This one setting(EPAP) made the difference between compliance and noncompliance for me.

Not everyone has a stash of booger sugar tucked away in the night stand to keep that girlish figure like yourself

My only advice is make sure you have all the life insurance you need before getting that test done....a positive sleep apnea will raise your rates

Can you just buy a cpap machine and supplies without the doctor’s red tape and the insurance company’s blessing?

Yes. You just need a prescription. After doing research on r/cpap and r/SleepApnea. I bought a Resmed Airsense 10 Auto CPAP from cpap.com and got it in 3 days. There are other online stores that might be cheaper, but most of them don't have stock with the Phillips recall that is going on.
I have HDHP ins and with my deductible that would have reset in Jan, decided I'll just pay out of pocket. I'll reimburse myself with my HSA sometime in the future.
