I don't understand? Is the Starhopper in 2019 part if the Starship program overall? Because Falcon 9 had its first successful orbital delivery and return landing like a decade ago.
So is the five years just this Starship program?

They were testing a new engine.

they could give NASA 10 trillion dollars and they would not be able to accomplish what SpaceX did in the same timeframe.
Don't give THIS government any ideas

Ahh. Got it.

Yup. Falcon uses merlin engine, which used RP-1 and Oxygen in an open cycle. Open cycle is the most common for today's engines. The landing is done as a suicide burn, there is no throttling of power.
Starhopper was first go of the Raptor engine. It uses methane and oxygen, and the first full flow cycle to fly. Raptor engines allow more control and can be throttled better. V3 raptors are among the most powerful and efficient rocket engines, and they have not even used those yet.
Full vs. Closed vs. Open cycles of rocket engines is a good read or watch. Go to Everyday Astronaut and enjoy

Currently working on a project for NASA and it is a shitshow of epic proportions

Nasa should take note.

Yes, yes, expensive, maybe poorly managed ; but damn she was sexy fly through the air. She just looked bad arse.

Killed more people than Starship.
Going to be fun watching Elon’s robots build a city on Mars.

learned FAA, NASA and DoD can all issue launch licenses.
I did not know this.

Yep. the hopper was the test bed for the Raptor engines that are used on Starship and Super Heavy Booster.

Crazy how all that burning Jet Fuel did not make the structure collapse?

The Shuttle was a pickup truck for low earth orbit (LEO). I think Starship is a heavy launch vehicle to go beyond LEO.
SpaceX has made some very good engineering decisions to drive the cost down. They also take a novel systems engineering approach that enables them to navigate into and out of design changes more rapidly than NASA.
Nothing but props to the SpaceX team.

NASA should just quit. Just fire all their asses. Give the Artemis project to Elon, give him all the funding, give him the controls to all things associated to space and space travel.
If he wants to hire some of those stale fricks, let him decide.
Let someone in there that will get the most out of the investment.

Elon must have a very diverse work force to have achieved so much in such a relatively short time. I bet his staff is at least 10% lgbtq. Other companies should take note.

I agree Space Shuttle was sexy as hell, but will not even be close to Starship.

NASA should be dismantled and let the private sector do it since we have seen how much better it is. NASA at best should have some say so and a seat at the table but not wasting my money any longer.
