First summer trip to New England coast in 2016

Will be two families with kids age 2-11. Recommendations? Best coastal towns to experience?

Truro is a nice little town- have stayed there on a few occasions. Just a few minutes away from P-town and very family friendly. Good cohogs, steamers, and lobster rolls. Lots of beach activities and very relaxing.

Block Island - off the coast of Rnode Island. Similar to Nantucket but not nearly as commercial. Truly, one of my favorite places...

Block Island is good, Nantucket is good as well, with small kids I'd favor Nantucket.
Boston of course, the historical sights and possibly a visit to the Fens for some bawl.
Not many Southerners make it up to New England, it's well worth visiting.

I just did a day trip to Newburyport, MA yesterday and loved it. Right next to Plum Island, where there are great beaches. Good shops, restaurants, and a winery and brewery to visit as well.
Gloucester, MA is also a great little coastal town with a fantastic whale watching tour. Did that a while back and loved it.
I am in Newport, RI 5 days a week and it's picturesque. However, in the summer it can be very touristy and crowded.
Of course there's Martha's Vineyard, the Cape, and Nantucket as well. But again, expect crowds in the summer. But they are beautiful areas.
Gloucester, MA is also a great little coastal town with a fantastic whale watching tour. Did that a while back and loved it.

Thanks for the help folks. If you had to choose between Gloucester and ugunquit as a home base for 6 days, which one? Both have trains going into Boston, Providence, etc.

Never been to the latter, but frankly 6 days would be a long time in glouchester.
The commuter rail also goes out to Newburyport, and I think there's more to see and do there.

We spend a week each summer on the coast of southern Maine, just south of Portland. The weather is awesome and the food is great. Beaches are nice, but that water to to cold for me. You can take a ferry out of Portland to an island and spend the day. We also like the history stuff around Boston.

York Beach, Maine. Went every year as a kid with the family. Just an awesome place for kids and adults!
