Let me ask you something. Would it really surprise you if it was a thing? Because, it would not surprise me anymore. My shock meter is kaput. Now, I’m under no grand delusion that this is widespread, but I’m not shocked that some have embraced the idea, simply because of how fricking wack people have become. Given a few years and it may very well become the new thing. All it will take is for some hit TV show to promote it, or some viral video to put it in people’s heads, and many more will be all in on the concept, simply because they are easily led.

To be fair, things like this have most likely gone on for a long time. There's just more exposure with the widespread use of the internet. We hear more of the niche activities of people.
I always bring this up for Reddit. There's a subreddit of adults who like to wear baby diapers. I highly doubt these people came about when Reddit started. They've existed with their weird fetish for decades probably. We only hear about them now because the internet has given a community for anyone and everyone across the world to come together over their shared interests. For better or for worse.
