Please comment on a couple of issues (and, For background, I have 2 degrees from LSU, am a KA, and lived in a dorm my first semester).

1) Do any "cool" kids hit the dorms? If so, which, etc.

2) Re: rush...
He has an uncle who is only 2 yrs older than him, who is an active DKE, and the rush is on. Are Dekes still trust fund druggies from NOLA. What are his chances of survival (and maintaining his full ride academic scholly), if he pledges with Animal House)?

U damn right they are.

Having said that I have several family members that were Dekes and know quite a few others and most have turned out very well.

Didn't do any greek life but dorms didn't have any negative connotation when I was a freshman 4 years ago. Greeks were well represented in my dorm.

The only thing I know about DKE is they hang those trashy signs before football games. I would be ashamed to be associated with that, but maybe I was just raised that way.

I feel now like I made a big mistake when my oldest lived at home his first year. He didn't meet many people like I did when I lived in dorms and Greek house. I still have very good friends because of that. It also exposes them to college life and people that are in the same major. It is very expensive to live on campus.

I didn't stay in the dorms... but then again I'm not a socially awkward loser.

I have a freshman, most dorms are fine, recently remodeled. Plenty of normal kids in them, especially younger ones. My son rushed is in a frat, happy. Not sure about deke and drugs but he de finitely says their animal house reputation is intact.

Hello Brother.

My daughter is at Millsaps, so I have no experience with a child at LSU. I do have nieces and nephews and friend's kids who are at LSU. It does not appear that there is any stigma associated with dorm living, especially for underclassmen.

Just graduated two kids from LSU.

No stigma with starting in dorms. Most kids move out quickly to apartments off campus, he'll bring up the subject when the time comes.

Not sure how long you've been out, but the Frat scene has changed a bit. Harder to have alcohol on campus so fewer parties at the frat houses. Smaller pledge classes, more expensive, more elaborate parties. Sorority girls outnumber guys 3-1, great ratio for the socials for freshmen--but the guys are expected to buy drinks for all three of the "assigned" girls = $$. NO hazing is allowed, so there's less of a sense of commitment by pledges when initiated. Otherwise, same old, same old.

KA, KSig, Phi Delt, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu generally considered the best. Deke is just like its always been, edge and goofy and very New Orleans. LOTS of drugs, coke, etc. now in almost all the frats--give him the peer pressure talk, he'll need it.

Labor.

First year in the dorm is a requirement in my family. 4 generations, everyone lived in a dorm. N. stadium, Hodges, Kirby Smith, Miller.

DKE is not good anymore and everyone knows it but the current actives. It sucks because I enjoyed hanging out with them when I was in school.

He needs to live in herget. Let him decide which frat is best for him.
