I'm firmly in the Millennial camp and all of my friends in high school (2004 - 2008) thought this movie was the greatest thing ever. We set up our own little fight clubs at school and off campus and of course filmed them (anyone remember the Kimbo Slice hype?).

Hell, I think I even bought a red leather jacket like Tyler Durden.

I still think it's a good movie, but I realize now that it was a huge Gen X nihilistic wank fantasy for people who took Nirvana a little too seriously.

Gotcha so he’s even older than the guy who wrote the novel?

Not that it really matters because the movie is almost entirely faithful to the book.

There are some exceptions.

I’m happy to hear, that’s a cool story

Yeah I guess. I wasn’t the one that was trying to prove anything about who wrote the novel or screenplay. I was just piggybacking off the guy that said a Gen X-r wrote it. Don’t really care about that.

I’m more trying to discuss the audience and who relates and who doesn’t.

47yo here and it's still in my top five movies ever. My middle kid just watched it for the first time. It's now high on their list too.

Funny/not funny story: I never heard of or bought a stick of Ikea furniture until this movie came out which totally went against the premise of the movie. Ikea owes Fight Club money.

You think this is only applicable to GenX? Why do you think a decent chunk of the millennial generation had to attach themselves to completely invented social causes like we’re still in the Jim Crowe days?

I was actually going to mention that in my post. They may be "invented" causes but like you said Millenials act like we are in the Jim Crowe days.

Meh ...the range for GenXers, like all of these made up generational names, varies somewhere between 1960-1984..... I'm not sure why you would argue that the novel and the movie was not written for Gen Xers. Thats not a revelation any more than the notion the Easy Rider was a touchstone film for the 60's generation. Thats not to say many in your generation can't understand and appreciate the themes in both he novel and the movie because I'm sure you can.

No. It's well established that gen x begins at 1965

By who...The Pew Research Council...It doenst really matter.... my point was Chuck Palahniuk certainly wasnt writing about boomers (even if by your metrics he technically is one.) It was about the generation he identified with which was X.

Older millennials saw it in theaters and made it a cult hit on dvd then went off to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq a few years later.

Are you confusing Z with millenial?

Right and millennials arbitrarily start somewhere between 81-84. So the oldest would've been 18 you dumbass. If you're gonna have a weird generational hissy fit. At least know some basic info.

It was the greatest movie ever made to me when I was like 16 and first saw it. Don't really care for it now

The point of the thread is not to throw a generational hissy or bash any generation or argue who did or see and/or enjoy the movie.

The point is, who relates and understands the movie better and who does and doesn’t get it.

The millennials In this thread have proven my point by the evidence of their melt and soft feelings.
