It's called the Gold team at LSU. It's mostly guys who try to walk on to the basketball team but can't. They are all really good basketball players and could easily beat the girls if they tried, but like someone else said, they are told to play a certain way, and if they don't they aren't on the team anymore. I used to officiate some of the scrimmages.
It's a pretty sweet gig. They get shoes and other stuff just like student athletes would.

IIRC Women's shotput and discus are about half the weight of the men's.

No no no. She was a star gymnast back in the mid 2000s or so, one of D.D. Breaux's best and brightest. She was all of 5ft nothing and could probably kick most of our asses. This chick was a powerhouse, and it was rumored that she fricked most of the football team back then.
