how do you cope?
Get your shite together. Drunk posting is bad.
Back to the topic. How do I cope? I tell myself that the demons or mistakes that took them were long engrained through means that didn't involve me.
Now if you were part of the path that lead to their departing your life, then please seek real professional help.

With the feeling that somewhere, somewhen, you could have done something to save them?
The first thing to do is to try being objective. Is there anything specific you could name that would have absolutely kept him from dying? If yes, would it really have worked or just delayed things? (ie: drug OD)
If your answer is that you couldn't have done anything (which is what the thread topic indicates) then you're just holding onto your guilt as a way of holding on to him. It's selfish, self-destructive, a waste of your time and energy and he would probably not want you putting yourself through this every year.

Live everyday and remember the great times you can tell him about when you see him again. He will have a good time show you around and explaining stuff.
