Unlike smartphones and consumer computers that regularly see over-the-air software updates, things like pacemakers and defibrillators are more likely to be left alone once they enter the market, making them an easy mark for would-be attackers. Given that fact, the medical industry faces an array of new threats that it might be uniquely unprepared for.

WTF?

I played a game called Hacknet where one of your hacking missions was to get the IP of some guy's pacemaker and to stop it.

There were many steps to do this though.

Holy shite. That could be some serious hostage shite there. Don't even need to kidnap anyone to get to them. Wow.

If an EMP was set off, would everyone with a pacemaker drop dead?

A year or two ago some guy at a tech conference did a proof of concept demonstration showing it would be possible to kill someone by hacking an implanted medical device. Seems like it would be pretty simple to guard against; just don't allow the things to be adjusted remotely. Require hands on or near hands on intervention.

This was the plot of some show a couple of years ago where they assassinated the President by this method. I can't remember the show though.

This is the reason I refuse to hook things like my house hold door locks to the internet.

This takes "ransomware" on computers to a much higher stakes game of chicken

Yes it was one of the missions in hacknet and it is very real. Defcon had a guy going to present something about it and it never came about...wonder why. I thought I would have been the only one to play hacknet on TD lol

Real l33t hackxzor. Not to veer off course, but there should be new DLC by March 2017.

Also, people want to hack these pacemaker because they can. It is all about curiosity, however this is some serious stuff. The companies are at fault if anything comes about with deaths or problems the companies should be held liable to an extent. They knew this was possible, but instead will just push products out that aren't secure.
