One thing you can do is make sure you are getting good quality deep sleep. That's the cycle that the brain cleans itself off all the plaque building.

My mother had early onset dementia. I know her lack of sleep (my dad is chronically and never sleeps so she had terrible sleep) and her stress didn't help her any and I believe lead to her getting this shite in her mid 50s.

It really wrecks your family life. I think it pushed my family away from God out of anger. I myself was very angry. It took me a long time to understand suffering. Not sure I fully grasp it now.

Based on the areas of the internet I visit this drug will have little to no effect.

Ya, some folks I follow say the drug was approved because it reduced beta-amyloid, and not for actually slowing decline. People think lowering beta-amyloid will slow decline but the trials didn't prove that if I'm interpreting their comments correctly.

Some further critique the failure rate for this is extremely high while environmental and behavioral factors have had better success.

My uncle had a law degree was a Secret Service agent who at one time guarded the life of the POTUS.

He died with a diaper on and did not know his wife of 45 years or his children.

The only disease I fear worse is ALS.

How long was this in trials and the FDA approval process? Now do the current Covid vaccines.

My man, look into chelating supplements that'll take mineral metals out of your body like aluminum and copper. It might all be speculation but to me its worth a capsule a day to remove that possibility.

I don't think the OPs article stated the anticipated actual cost.
It's estimated to be $56,000 per year.

Highway robbery, IMO.

Yeah, I read an article sadly stating similar thoughts.

Bloomberg
quote:

Many other medicines have targeted amyloid. Unfortunately, all failed to help patients, leading scientists to question whether removing the plaque does anything. Biogen's opposing results only add to the uncertainty about the role of amyloid; they don't make it acceptable as the basis for a multibillion-dollar approval. What is certain is that removing the plaque causes sometimes serious side effects, including brain swelling. Biogen has explanations for the failed trial, blaming insufficient dosing and a few rapidly declining patients. But, unfortunately, this is what's known as post-hoc analysis, or less politely cherry-picking, and it is fundamentally and irrevocably biased. Good scientists use such methods to generate ideas for future tests, not as tentpoles for generationally significant drug approvals.
quote:

The FDA seems to have yielded to the pressure to give hope to patients, even if it may be false, despite the consequences. And there are many. If the agency approves drugs with middling evidence, that's what it will get. Companies will be more likely to seek approval or advance programs based on weak results, wasting time and research dollars and the health of patients who participate in clinical trials. As for Alzheimer’s, future drugs may be badly delayed. With an approved treatment available, it will likely become harder to recruit people to participate in trials. And now that the FDA has validated amyloid as a target, companies may focus on it at the expense of other potentially more fruitful avenues.

I lost my Father to Alz two years ago. It was horrible to watch him decline. He was a very strong man so his physical strength never really dropped off. It made him extremely hard to provide care for. He was kicked out of every memory care unit in central Florida.

Carb heavy diets are so so bad for you. Sugar is a killer. Ruins every part of your body in one way or the other. I still partake though cuz you gotta live a little.

100% spot on but it will take a long time to trickle down to the public consciousness unfortunately, esp. in a place like Louisiana. Bringing up low carb on here will get you downvoted

Unfortunately sounds like statins all over again…. Attacking an associated factor without proof it actually does anything beneficial and in fact can cause damage. Hope not though.

I am right there with you Freight - my Dad has late stage Dementia, and has TIA's almost weekly due to it - it is very sad and depressing to see the slow decline and be helpless to do anything about it.

my grandmother died of Alzheimer's, my Dad has Dementia and my uncle is showing signs of it as well. i fear it will get me too.

My mother has the gene, her mother had Alz, her aunts (mothers sisters) both had Alz. It freaking sucks.

I however do NOT have the gene and I'm beyond thankful.
