Ruidoso, New Mexico
Red Lodge, Montana
Kalispell, Montana

Ruidoso was hands down the best one. It is also the southernmost ski resort in the United States.

Montezuma Co...up above A Basin. One paved road going in, dirt ones going up to the Continental Divide. Carcasses of 4wd vehicles on the side of the road.

Nobody's mentioned Arcadia yet. During Driskill Mtn climbing season it's buzzing with expeditions from all over the world.

How has Creede Colorado not been said yet?

Creede is the answer you'd get if you asked the state of Colorado what a mountain town should be.

Highly recommend a summer trip there. It feels like pure Americana during their 4th of July Festival.

Canyon town...Downieville Ca. Famous for Downieville Downhill...fat tire ride from the top of an 8,800 ft elevation butte to town (at 2,900 ft). You should try it. I did it twice in one day. Also alot of crazy arse gold miners along the way you don't mess with.

If you want an intimate mountain experience then you should check out Ouray, Colorado. There's literally nothing there but mountains and streams. And hot water possibly.

Skagway, AK is underrated. It can be a mess during cruise ship season but its world class scenery and some of the best people you'll ever meet. In the summer it's full of college kids working summer jobs.

Much of the town is owned by the National Park Service and is part of a National Park.
