This accident sucks but general rule is you shouldn’t be out there driving at night. It’s hard to see anything, and private boats like in False River weren’t meant to drive at night. You could hit some shite floating in the water and destroy your boat, or hit another boat that doesn’t have their lights on. It’s incredibly hard to see out there on the water at night

For someone who has never been boating before, what's the point of being in the water with no lights. Seems awfully reckless.

Most boats come with lights, however, moisture and electricity don't mix, so unless you stay on top of it making sure they work (along with regular maintenance), you'll find yourself on the water after dark without working lights. Many times the intent is to be back before dark, but you get to having too much fun or catching too many fish (or having mechanical problems) and end up on the water at dark.

What does this even mean?

False River is fairly easy to navigate at night as long as you stay out of the no wake zones and don’t haul arse. You don’t see a lot of driftwood or anything, the shorelines are very visible, and there’s enough light pollution that it doesn’t get super dark unless the weather is bad. The biggest risks are running into a dumbass without lights or running into a pier/sandbar - hence, don’t haul arse and stay out of the no wake zones.

Sometimes accidents happen. It’s possible there was negligence involved, or alcohol. But I’m a little surprised at some of the “this is why you don’t drive a boat at night” takes.
