Totally justified lawsuit imo.
During the press conference, it was verbally stated that the mold issue causing him to move was back in March 2023.
But the story being painted is he was *recently moved into another apartment (against his will) with the older non student and this bad apple randomly pulled a gun on him 3 days before his death in October.
After 7 months of living with somebody, he just now found out this roommate was a drug dealer that was unsafe to be around? Thats where the narrative breaks down for me.
The university and apartment complex will most likely settle for big bucks, since the story is going to have a major impact on their enrollment for one, and people signing leases on the other, but I don’t exactly see where Coach Laird is held civilly liable here?

He won’t be. This isn’t a quest for justice. They’re naming as many as they can just hoping to collect as much as they can. Once they get their payout it’ll be over with. I doubt their attorney would advise them to continue after him once they get the real payday. It wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

IMO, very shortsighted IF the parents really want the truth. Depositions will get them the truth but some parents don’t want to know what got Johnny kilt.

Who’s been arrested for the murder?

There are many missing moving parts to this story.

MESSAGE FROM NSU’s QB “UNACCEPTABLE”: Over the weekend, I was put in contact with Northwestern State’s quarterback Tyler Vander Waal. He’s just days away from moving back to California after the decision by NSU leadership to cancel the remainder of their 2023 season. He says his football days are over.
He says he’s earned a masters in athletic administration which certainly makes him qualified, beyond being a team member, to question the way the days and weeks were handled after teammate Ronnie Caldwell was fatally shot.
I’ll share much of what he shared with me. He feels the decision to cancel the remainder of the season is “unacceptable”. Tyler says players were not asked to weigh in. After joining the Demons program in January, handling adversity was a big part of the team conversation - the need to rise up when faced with adversity. Instead, he feels the decision to end the season and walk away is in complete contrast with that messaging.
Responding to rumors of recent player drug testing that greatly reduced the number of eligible players to take the field, this is Tyler’s response. He says he was told by a player, just prior to the cancellation announcement, that he had been pulled to be drug tested and all players would be drug tested. Tyler says a member of the athletic department (non leadership) then told him the testing was being conducted by “police”, but he didn’t say if local or campus authorities. Again, this is how Tyler says he remembers it. And when we talked over the weekend, it’s a process he says was still ongoing.
For Tyler, he feels there would have been no greater way to honor Ronnie than to “play on”. There is now a change.org petition to continue the season ~>

Sure sounds like the players are getting a bad deal.

Has there been any new information on this investigation. I know the roommate was arrested for possession of a firearm and drugs, I think, but I can't find where he was charged with anything else.

Who is guilty of the crime?

Not a crime but will lose in civil court and has already lost in the court of popular opinion.

I'm not sure who you are saying will lose in civil court. It's an odd case. I don't know who was obligated or if anyone was obligated to move the boy elsewhere or put him in a certain place to live with other students. I don't know the answer to that.
I saw somewhere that the roommate was charged with attempted second degree murder when he was 18, but I don't know if he was convicted.
What the family didn't address in the press conference was what happened between the time the father called the coach and told him to move the boy and the time the boy was killed. Did Daddy call the coach or the boy and confirm this took place? Did he just assume it took place and didn't talk with either the coach or his son? Daddy said the next call he got was 3 days later from the coach saying his son was dead.
Was the school aware of any of this before the shooting?
Why didn't the son or the father or the coach call the police at the time?
Lots of unanswered questions in my mind, but the big one is did the roommate shoot the boy and, if so, why hasn't there been a charge?
