I was placed in ATC school after joining the Marines open contract. I don't remember the FAA test being hard. Some of the navy/usmc tests were though.

Has to do with the amount of time and training you need before you're a full-fledged controller. And they also make you retire young too.

Truth. Guy in my hunting club retired in his early fifties after 25 years on the job. Worked in a windowless environment & never saw the sun while on the job.

As long as there's no drug testing, I should be in a control tower shortly.

There is an age requirement, you cannot be older than 31 to apply

We Gen Xers are going to protest.
Seriously though, how can you legally prohibit someone older than a certain age from applying?
I know some sharp witted and quick 60 year olds, and some lazy as frick, irresponsible 20 year olds. One can apply and one cannot? ?

Pretty sure they only hire minorities

If I remember correctly, there were definitely points for being minority or veteran. Vets got 10 pt preference, I believe.

Now, I applied to the Forest Service years ago and the guy doing the hiring was a friend. He told me up front that applications went in three piles. Vets, minorities and us white guys. He said my chances were slim to none because if he hired a non vet white guy he would spend weeks writing letters having to explain why. This was in the mid 90's.

I do this for a living if y'all have questions. I've done military (USMC), tower, tracon, and enroute.
Yes, it's difficult and stressful. Yes, you can make good money.

Doesn't seem very difficult. Get plane up. Get plane down. Don't hit other planes.

We will place you in "overly qualified" group. When can you start?

Had a buddy do this is New Mexico. He was pretty good at it...his daughter was wacky and kinda hot. He ended up meeting this guy at a bar one night and the next day...booom. Several planes colided. It ended up being a big deal. Haven't heard from him since.

You don't start out in the tower landing planes. Your first jobs is sitting in a dark room with no windows watching a radar and getting planes from in sector to another.

That is where most air traffic controllers work.

To get 10 pt preference you have to be 30% or more disabled from your time in service. Serving in a military campaign or theater will make you 5 point vet.

Approach or Tower many facilities work up/down LFT,BTR,and MSY are all up down where controllers work both. Places like LAX, IAH, and ATL are separate.

Obama needs some job numbers help huh?

I guess he can't do another census where they kept hiring the same people every 2-3 weeks or something like that?

I'm sure our new Regugee's would make for good Traffic Controllers.

Jesus christ there are some stupid mother frickers on this site
